Huawei seems to be developing a new smartphone bearing the P Smart brand, as the OEM filed to trademark the “P Smart X” moniker with the European Union Intellectual Property Office earlier this week. The application was filed in the United Kingdom indicating that the device is likely planned for release in Europe or the UK at the very least. It contains no information about the device itself but confirms that the moniker is entirely related to smartphones and no other category of consumer electronics.
The Huawei P Smart (2019) was just unveiled in December and to our knowledge, no P Smart variant unveiled so far carries the “X” suffix in its moniker. Having said that, the Huawei P Smart X spotted in the EUIPO database earlier today is likely a new device, possibly a follow-up version to the model launched late last year, or at the least, it might be another variant of the same device differentiated by several key changes.
The recently-launched Huawei P Smart is equipped with a 6.21-inch IPS LCD display boasting a resolution of 2,340 by 1,080 pixels and a 19:5:9 image format, leading to a screen-to-body ratio of around 83 percent and a pixel density of roughly 415ppi. The screen has a teardrop-shaped display notch at the top and the device carries a rear-mounted fingerprint sensor and dual rear-facing cameras.
Powered by Huawei’s own Kirin 710 chipset launched in mid-2018, as well as 3GB of RAM and 32GB or 64GB of internal storage, the Huawei P Smart (2019) is technically an upper mid-range device. Having said that, it remains to be seen whether this mysterious Huawei P Smart X will fit in the same category, and even if it doesn’t then time will tell whether the X-labeled device will push towards the higher-end market or make some compromises in favor of a lower price tag. If it will be a direct sequel to the model release in December then it’s logical to assume that it will feature upgraded components, but if it’s a spin-off device as part of the same series, it could go either way.
Huawei applied to trademark the moniker on February 13 and since the Huawei P Smart X is likely to be released across Europe or at least in certain European countries, there is a chance that the mysterious device will be unveiled at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona later this month, prior to hitting the shelves later this year.
The event will open its doors to the public on February 25 and not only is Huawei expected to showcase new mobile devices at the conference, but the OEM also confirmed that it will bring new 5G technologies to the stage. Meanwhile, rumors claim that the tech giant’s first foldable phone which will also boast 5G networking will be showcased at the same event.
The OEM also seems to be considering the return of its “Mini” branding according to a previous EUIPO trademark application discovered earlier this year, indicating that flagship phones wrapped in smaller packages could make a return to the market in 2019, at least as far as Huawei is concerned.
