HMD Global is gearing up for the official unveiling of the Nokia 9 PureView, and with less than two weeks left on the calendar, the device has now been spotted in the FCC database. The documents confirm that the smartphone will have a plethora of rear-facing cameras and that it will be available in single SIM and dual SIM variants identified by the model numbers “TA-1087 SS” and “TA-1087 DS,” respectively.
Furthermore, a sketch attached to the FCC document confirms that the Nokia 9 PureView will be an Android One device, which means it should offer stock Android software and timely software updates following its market release. More specifically, however, it would seem that the Android One brand will not be required for the version launching in China, which is identified by the model number TA-1094. This could mean that the OEM will launch the phone in China with some form of proprietary software on top of Android OS.
As for the variant known as the TA-1087, the FCC documents reveal that it should support GSM bands 850 and 1900, WCDMA bands II, IV, and V, as well as FDD-LTE bands 2, 4, 5, 7, 12, 13, 17, and 66. Wi-Fi 802.11 a/g/n/ac and Bluetooth connectivity are also included.
Other hardware details have not been disclosed by the FCC application, but the sketch does confirm that the Nokia 9 PureView will be equipped with a total of five rear-facing cameras coupled with an LED flash and what could be a laser autofocus module. The sensors are clustered in a pattern similar to a revolver’s barrel and true to the PureView brand, the device carries the “Zeiss” label on the back, indicating that the German optical systems manufacturer has been involved in the smartphone’s development, particularly for the unusual camera configuration.
Lastly, two of the FCC labels detailed in the application seem to confirm two color options for the device’s exterior, namely Tempered Black and Blue. Other colors may become available but this remains to be seen.
As for the smartphone’s specifications, a premature listing on the Android Enterprise website revealed that the smartphone should be equipped with a 6-inch display, run Android 9 Pie, and offer 4GB of RAM along with 128GB of storage. It will offer support for NFC connectivity and will be equipped with a fingerprint sensor, although at the moment the sensor’s location is unclear. It doesn’t seem to be placed on the back of the phone or the front lower bezel, so unless the fingerprint reader has been concealed within the physical power button the only remaining option would be the implementation of an in-display sensor.
According to preliminary data, the Nokia 9 PureView should be based on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 845 chipset, meaning that despite its obvious high ambitions in certain areas, the device will be powered by a high-end silicon that has already been replaced by a newer generation. Whether this will be the case, and whether other shortcuts had to be made in order to create this camera-centric smartphone remains to be seen. The Nokia 9 PureView will be unveiled on February 24 at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.
