Samsung’s upcoming Galaxy S10+ flagship has leaked again, this time in a hands-on video put up by Mobile Fun, showcasing its in-display fingerprint reader and punch-hole selfie cameras. The somewhat blurry footage appears to showcase the handset with a custom-cut screen protector in place, leaving a disconcerting hole near the bottom-center where the under-display fingerprint scanner has been placed. An oval-shaped cutout is also in place over the selfie cameras at the top-right-hand side of the display.
The UI shown in the video is fairly standard and lines up nicely with that found in previous Samsung flagships, with a lock screen topped by what seems to be a motion-triggered always-on display layout.
Cutouts in the screen protector give some indication as to what users can expect from the new flagship when it launches. For the fingerprint scanner, the circular cutout takes up around a quarter of the display horizontally. So it does seem to be noticeably larger than the in-screen reader found in other handsets. Similarly, the cutouts for the camera take up around a fifth of the display space horizontally, matching up with previous leaks.
Display bezels at the left and right-hand edges, topped by curved glass, are almost non-existent while the chin and top bezel are similarly minuscule.
Just days remain
Samsung is expected to fully unveil its Galaxy S10 family, celebrating the tenth anniversary of the series’ launch, just ahead of MWC 2019 at an Unpacked event taking place February 20. The Samsung Galaxy S10+ shown off in the latest leak is the largest of three handsets — the Galaxy S10e, Galaxy S10, and Galaxy S10+ — that have leaked in the leadup to that event. Samsung has already confirmed those model designations too.
For the Galaxy S10 family, users can expect either an in-house Exynos 9820 SoC internationally or a Snapdragon 855 SoC in the US but RAM and storage will be among differentiating characteristics. Each will ship with Android 9 Pie with Samsung’s One UI over top. Size will also be an aspect setting the handsets apart, in addition to the camera configurations.
The Samsung Galaxy S10+ is expected to come in a 6.3-inch format with a QHD+ AMOLED display and buyers will be able to choose from 6GB, 8GB, or 12GB RAM. The most powerful variant will ship with a ceramic rear panel and some predictions have surfaced indicating that version could ship with 5G support too. A 4,000mAh battery will power that package.
Key separating factors
Both the Samsung Galaxy S10+ and Galaxy S10 will ship with a three-sensor primary camera array — expected to be configured as two 12-megapixel cameras and one 16-megapixel camera. The larger flagship will include a 10-megapixel and 8-megapixel dual-camera on the front while the smaller device will only have a single 10-megapixel camera forward-facing shooter. The Samsung Galaxy S10e will have the same front-facing camera as its slightly more powerful sibling but will only have a dual-camera setup on back comprised of a 12 and 16-megapixel camera.
In terms of other specifications, the Samsung Galaxy S10 has been leaked as shipping with a 6.1-inch QHD+ AMOLED display that’s curved, with a choice between 6GB or 8GB of RAM and a 3,400mAh battery. The Samsung Galaxy S10e will take things closer to the ‘budget’ end of the spectrum with a flat 5.8-inch display. A side-mounted fingerprint reader will be used there instead of the under-display sensor in its counterparts. 6GB and 8GB RAM will still be options for memory but the battery is downscaled to 3,100mAh.
