The Mobile World Congress is less than a week away and to hype up its upcoming offerings, Sony recently took to Twitter to tease what looks like the upcoming Xperia XZ4. The company is apparently hinting at the alleged CinemaWide display of the phone, which is tipped to have an unusually tall aspect ratio of 21:9. The teaser invites users to “embrace a new perspective” and has also revealed that the company would be holding an event in Barcelona on February 25 at 8:45 CET. The super short clip also seems to corroborate earlier rumors that said that the Xperia XZ4 would be notchless and it will have minimal bezels.
Alternatively, the company could be hinting at the camera setup of the Sony Xperia XZ4, as not only is it rumored to be the company’s first handset with a triple camera system, it is also tipped to come with a 52-megapixel camera. If the rumor has any weight, the Xperia XZ4 could feature the biggest camera sensor ever seen on a smartphone. This could make the phone an imaging powerhouse and if supplemented by the right software, the Sony Xperia XZ4 could indeed offer a new perspective.
Apart from the alleged CinemaWide display and the rumored 52-megapixels camera, it doesn’t appear that the Sony Xperia XZ4 has a lot going for it. The smartphone industry seems to be in the middle of a paradigm shift right now, with major OEMs planning to release their foldable and 5G-ready smartphones in the future. However, Sony is apparently sitting out both of these technologies and this wouldn’t really help its beleaguered smartphone business. Moreover, it also seems that the company’s upcoming flagship will come with a traditional fingerprint scanner, something which will be replaced with an in-display fingerprint scanner on most high-end phones this year.
Per rumors, the Sony Xperia XZ4 will sport a 6.5-inches OLED screen with a QHD+ resolution of 3360 x 1440 pixels. As mentioned before, the phone will allegedly have three cameras on the back, a 16-megapixels main camera with an f/1.6 aperture lens, the aforementioned 52-megapixels camera with an aperture of f/1.6, and 0.3-megapixels Time of Flight sensor with an aperture of f/1.4. However, as Google’s Pixel smartphones have proven, software has an as important role to play as hardware when it comes to imaging so it remains to be seen if the alleged camera setup would deliver the same performance as the likes of Google Pixels 3 and Huawei P20 Pro.
The Sony Xperia XZ4 will reportedly be fueled by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 855 chipset, 6GB of RAM, and 128GB of internal memory. It will presumably carry a gargantuan battery with a capacity of a 4400mAh. The phone will most probably ship with the Android 9.0 Pie. According to previous leaks, the Xperia XZ4 will also feature the Side Sense drawer, a feature that made a debut with the Xperia XZ3, which allows users to access different apps and features with a tap on the phone’s screen. Apart from the Xperia XZ4, Sony is also expected to unveil the midrangers Xperia 10 and Xperia 10 Plus during the MWC.
