Executive Director and CEO of Huawei Consumer Business Group, Richard (Chengdong) Yu, took to the Chinese social media network Weibo to tease the upcoming Huawei P30 flagship series with a handful of new promotional images, all of which confirm that the device will take advantage of some form of advanced optical zoom capabilities.
Last week Huawei’s Global Product Marketing VP confirmed that the P30 series will be equipped with camera arrays that would offer super-zoom capabilities. The VP didn’t specify exactly what type of technology will be used but hinted at something similar to the periscope style lens used previously by OPPO.
This confirmation came weeks after Richard Yu issued the first teaser image for the P30 series’ impressive camera. Published on the executive’s Weibo account, the zoomed-in photo suggested that the Huawei P30 or at least P30 Pro features a camera setup capable of enough optical zoom to be able and photograph close-up shots of the Moon.
But the latest images are not as “raw” as the Moon shot, and instead, they seem to have been edited and created to serve as official promotional material. The teaser images confirm that the Huawei P30 series will be officially introduced on March 26 in Paris, and they are all accompanied by the hashtag #RewriteTheRules.
It’s obvious by the way Huawei is handling the P30’s launch preparations that the OEM is placing great emphasis on the new series’ camera technology. Of course, Huawei is not the only OEM to have focused on its smartphone cameras, and competition in this particular area is fierce, with smartphone makers employing multiple rear-facing sensors and sensor types, including Time-of-Flight cameras for real-time 3D scanning of objects and environments.
Preliminary specs indicate that the Huawei P30 will be equipped with a 40-megapixel main sensor with a wide lens, a 20-megapixel ultrawide unit, and an 8-megapixel telephoto sensor, presumably featuring 5x optical zoom. All three modules are expected to take advantage of laser and phase-detection autofocus.
Aside from the camera technologies, the Huawei P30 should feature a Kirin 980 chipset developed in-house by the HiSilicon arm. The SoC features a total of eight ARM Cortex-A76 CPU cores coupled with a Mali-G76 MP10 (10-core) graphics chip and 8GB of RAM.
The Huawei P30 is likely to make use of a 6.1-inch AMOLED display with a resolution of 2,340 by 1,080 and carry a fingerprint sensor underneath the panel. Details surrounding the Huawei P30 Pro are scarce but the devices should share some common traits including the chipset and fingerprint recognition sensor.
Huawei appears to be highly competitive this year, not only by continuing to improve its smartphone cameras but also by joining the emerging foldable phone market segment ahead of all other OEM’s except Samsung. Huawei unveiled the Mate X foldable device at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona last month, and the unit should become available for purchase later this summer.
Meanwhile, the Huawei P30 series will be unveiled in Paris later this month and should be launched in the coming weeks. Pricing details are unknown but the OEM will unveil more regarding availability and price points at the event in France.
