Per a new leaked specifications sheet of sorts, a new Samsung mid-ranger called the Galaxy A60 is in pipeline and may launch as soon as April. The configuration sheet has listed all the key details of the upcoming phone. With no official confirmation from Samsung about the device, it’s best to take this report with a grain of salt.
The Galaxy A60 will presumably sport a 6.7-in Super AMOLED Infinity-U display with FHD+ resolution. It will also feature an in-display fingerprint scanner, most likely of the optical variety, as an ultrasonic scanner would drive up the cost of the handset. The phone will have a Glasstic back which is Samsung’s term for glossy plastic.
According to the leaked sheet, the Galaxy A60 will be underpinned by the SM6150 chipset, which is the codename for the Snapdragon 675 SoC. It’s a mid-range chipset which is based on the Kryo 460 architecture and is flanked by Adreno 612 GPU. It also features Qualcomm’s third-generation multi-core Artificial Intelligence Engine (AI Engine) and thus, it is capable of providing decent performance.
The alleged specifications sheet also says that the Samsung Galaxy A60 will come with a triple rear camera system, consisting of a 32-megapixels primary sensor, and presumably one 5-megapixels depth camera and an 8-megapixels wide-angle sensor. The selfie shooter would reportedly be 32-megapixels.
A gargantuan 4500mAh capacity battery is expected to run the show. The phone will have an internal memory of 128GB which can either be paired with 6GB or 8GB of RAM. The Galaxy A60 will most likely come with Android 9 Pie with Samsung’s One UI on top.
As the smartphone market witnesses a slowdown, Samsung is also feeling the heat. Although it’s still the number one smartphone maker in the world, sales have begun to level out as consumers look for more affordable options. The high price tags of its recent flagships haven’t helped either, as preference has shifted to Chinese smartphone makers who offer similar specifications at lower prices.
That’s why the South Korean giant has adjusted its strategy a bit. The company is now focusing on mid-rangers and it has even promised to bring its new features to its mid-range offerings first. This would not only help the chaebol check the market response to its new features before incorporating them into its flagships, but it will also give it an opportunity to compete with other OEMs that crank out affordably priced phones with innovative features. This strategy could work well in price-sensitive markets like India, where consumers do not care about bells and whistles and their purchase decisions are motivated by basic features such as camera quality.
Samsung recently launched a handful of mid-range devices including the Galaxy A10, Galaxy A30, and Galaxy A50 and the portfolio will expectedly be expanded further with the Galaxy A40 and Galaxy A90 in the future. As for the Galaxy A60, it remains to be seen how much it will cost. The phone will most likely only be released in India and a few European countries.
