During the ongoing Baselworld 2019 expo, the Swiss watchmaker TAG Heuer announced the golf-centric version of its Connected Modular 45 Wear OS smartwatch alongside the Tag Heuer Golf app. The Tag Heuer Connected Modular 45 Golf Edition features a revamped design, but beyond that, it is largely similar to the standard version and there aren’t any technical upgrades to speak of.
The dial of the watch reads “GOLF EDITION,” and the overall design is golf-themed. The 45mm watch is shock-resistant and has a black ceramic bezel ring on the top which is engraved with the numbers 1 through 18 to represent the 18 holes in a round of golf. The case and the caseback are made from PVD titanium and the leather strap of the timepiece is white with green stitching. Off the field, you can swap that strap with the black rubber one. The 1.39-inch touchscreen of the smartwatch has a resolution of 400×400 pixels and is protected by a scratch-resistant sapphire crystal
The free Golf app works on both iOS and Android smartphones. It has 3D renderings of more than 39,000 golf courses and also provides performance stats. However, it’s worth mentioning that the 3D course mapping would be shown on the smartphones, while the watch will display interactive 2D course mapping. The company says that it keeps its database up to date to add new courses and to account for changes to existing courses to make sure that its 3D maps are accurate.
The companion app is not exclusive to the TAG Heuer Connected Modular 45 Golf Edition and can work with other TAG Heuer Connected Modular smartwatches as well. The watch also shows distances to greens and hazards and can record scores so that you won’t have to use a paper scorecard. There is also a shot-recording feature which can record shot distances. Once a round finishes, the stats are forwarded from the watch to the app on the phone and further analytical data is derived from that.
Under the hood, the TAG Heuer Connected Modular 45 Golf Edition has the Intel Atom processor. It has 512 MB of memory and 4GB of storage and runs the latest version of Google’s Wear OS. The timepiece also features GPS and NFC and also has a microphone and a vibrations haptics engine. A 410mAh capacity battery runs the show and with normal usage, it can last up to 25 hours. The watch is also water resistant to a depth of 50 meters.
Although TAG Heuer’s latest watch is based around golfing, it doesn’t skimp on any of the regular features of smartwatches. You can use it to send messages, receive notifications, and play audio, and it goes without saying that you aren’t stuck with the golf app, other apps can be downloaded too.
As is the case with special editions, the TAG Heuer Connected Modular 45 Golf Edition will be more expensive than the Tag Heuer Connected Modular 45. It will cost $1,850 in the U.S. and £1,600 in the UK. Alongside the watch, TAG Heuer would also be packing in three golf balls in the box with the company’s logo.
