Moto Z4 To Embrace (Somewhat) Affordable 5g

A new leak provided details about the specifications of an upcoming smartphone from the handset maker Motorola, the Moto Z4.

The leak came from the online publication 91Mobile, which claims that the information about the device’s internals originated from internal marketing material. One of the striking findings from the leaked marketing material is that the Moto Z4 will ship with the Snapdragon 675 chipset from Qualcomm. This SoC features an octa-core Kryo 460 CPU running at a maximum clock speed of 2.0GHz and the Adreno 612 GPU.

This detail marks a shift from the Moto Z3, which sported a chipset from Qualcomm’s flagship lineup, although the device featured the Snapdragon 835 SoC, which is not the latest premium processor from Qualcomm when the handset launched.

Despite sporting a mid-range chipset from Qualcomm, the Moto Z4 will still offer 5G connectivity with the help of Motorola’s 5G Moto Mod. Aside from adding support for 5G networks, the Moto Mod also features a 2,000mAh battery, which adds to the 3,600mAh power pack already present in the device. The handset also supports Motorola’s proprietary TurboCharge fast-charging technology for quick top-ups of the battery.

The recent leak also indicates that the Moto Z4 will feature a 6.4-inch OLED display with a resolution of Full HD+. While the Moto Z3 sported a side-mounted fingerprint scanner, the Moto Z4 comes with an in-display fingerprint sensor. However, the leak did not identify the type of in-screen fingerprint scanner that the Moto Z4 will utilize.

The Moto Z4 will also reportedly ship with a 48-megapixel camera at the back and a 25-megapixel selfie shooter at the front. Both cameras will utilize the Quad Pixel technology, which combines four pixels into a single large pixel. While employing this technology will reduce the resolution of images captured by the rear and selfie cameras to 12-megapixels and 6-megapixels respectively, it should improve the low-light performance of the handset.

Moreover, the leak also claims that the rear camera of the Moto Z4 will feature a Night Vision mode to improve further the quality of images captured by the handset at night time, while the front-facing shooter comes with a Group Selfie mode.

The Moto Z4 will ship with Android 9 Pie pre-installed. While the device offers a near-stock Android experience, Motorola adds several useful features, which include the Moto Display, Moto Actions, and Moto Experience.

Previous renders already detailed the design of the Moto Z4, which shows that the handset will feature a waterdrop-shaped notch at the front and a raised circular bump that holds the camera and the LED flash at the back. Earlier leaks also mention that the Moto Z4 will have at least 6GB of RAM.

Given the mid-range internals of the Moto Z4, it is likely that Motorola will market the device as an upper mid-tier handset. However, Motorola will also reportedly launch within the next few weeks several mid-range handsets belonging to the Motorola One series which could target the same market as the Moto Z4. It is likely that the smartphone manufacturer will market the handset’s compatibility with Moto Mods and additional software features as the Moto Z4’s key selling points.

It is not yet clear how Motorola will price the Moto Z4, although rumors indicate that the device will cost half as much as the current flagship handsets from competing smartphone makers.
