Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 855 mobile processor is one of the most powerful offerings in the market at the moment, and some info regarding its successor, the Snapdragon 865, has just surfaced.
This is the first serious piece of info that we’ve spotted when it comes to the Snapdragon 865, and it comes from WinFuture.de website. The source says that the Snapdragon 865 will sport the SM8250 model number, and that it will support LPDDR5 RAM. That’s not all, though, as the source also said that the processor is codenamed “Kora” over at Qualcomm.
The source claims that the aforementioned info is accurate, and the site also received some additional info that may not be as accurate. 5G may be optional when it comes to the Snapdragon 865, as it is with the Snapdragon 855, but the source cannot confirm that. A second chip has also been spotted in the internal dev board, a chip called SDM55 (Huracan), and that could be the Snapdragon 865’s external 5G modem, it remains to be seen.
The Snapdragon 865 is still in early development, so it’s not exactly surprising that this is the first serious piece of info that we’ve seen. The processor will probably become official towards the end of the year, as was the case with the Snapdragon 855 and a number of its predecessors.
The Snapdragon 855 is quite a powerful 64-bit octa-core processor, and it supports LPDDR4X RAM, for comparison’s sake, so the Snapdragon 865 will be a considerable improvement in that regard, it seems. The Snapdragon 865 will probably also be a 64-bit octa-core offering by Qualcomm, though nothing has been confirmed just yet.
As is the case every year, Qualcomm’s flagship processor will probably be joined by offerings from Samsung and Huawei at the very top of the food chain. MediaTek is always around, of course, but the company’s flagship offerings are often not able to keep up with Qualcomm, Samsung, and Huawei when sheer power is concerned, and MediaTek has been focusing on the mid-range market for quite some time now.
Samsung is expected to announce a successor to the Exynos 9820 in the second half of this year, while Huawei is expected to announce the Kirin 980’s successor prior to the Mate 30 series announcement, so that announcement will also take place in the second half of the year.
The Kirin 985 has been rumored for quite some time now, and some rumors even suggested that the Huawei P30 series will ship with that processor, but that did not happen. Well, it looks like Huawei may skip the Kirin 985 altogether, and focus solely on the Kirin 990, which is expected to be a proper successor to the Kirin 980, not a semi-iterative update to the company’s current flagship offering.
All in all, more Snapdragon 865 information is expected to arrive throughout this year, as this chip’s announcement is not even remotely close at this point. We are not even sure that the processor will be called Snapdragon 865, even though that seems to be the most logical choice considering that its predecessors were called the Snapdragon 835, 845, and 855.
