Two new leaks claim to confirm the name and display aspect ratio of an upcoming mid-range smartphone from Samsung, the Galaxy A80. Dutch-language website Mobielkopen uncovered a promo page from Samsung Cine Club website, a site targeted toward Latin American consumers, which reveals that Samsung will unveil a smartphone named the Galaxy A80. This handset will have a model number SM-A805F, and the mention of the device on Samsung’s Latin American promotional website suggests that the smartphone will be available in the region once the handset maker launches the product. Until recently, it was not clear if Samsung will name its upcoming mid-tier smartphone either as the Galaxy A80 or the Galaxy A90, although this promotional page seems to show that the South Korean device manufacturer may have settled with the Galaxy A80 branding.
The same online publication also managed to uncover a recent benchmark result that corroborates with earlier reports which claim that the Galaxy A80 will feature a 20:9 aspect ratio display. While the HTML5test reports the resolution of the handset as 412 by 915 pixels, the smartphone’s display will more likely have a size of 6.7-inches and an actual resolution of 2,400 by 1,080 pixels. Like other smartphones that Samsung launched recently, the Galaxy A80 will ship with Android 9 Pie pre-installed, although One UI, the tech giant’s proprietary skin will run on top of Google’s operating system.
Background: A recent leak provided extensive details about the specifications of the Galaxy A80. According to a rumor circulating on the Chinese microblogging site Weibo, the Galaxy A80 will feature the Snapdragon 7150 processor from Qualcomm, and this SoC features an octa-core CPU clocked at up to 2.2 GHz. There is little information available about the chipset, although a Github repository that references the Snapdragon 7150 suggests that the processor supports QHD+ displays, which means that the SoC has more than enough graphical processing power to support the screen of the Galaxy A80.
Recent rumors also suggest that the handset will have a 3,700mAh battery and that it will support fast charging of up to 25 watts. Furthermore, reports claim that the device will have a metal and glass build. However, the key selling point of the Galaxy A80 will be its camera setup that functions as both front-facing and rear shooters. This camera setup features three imaging modules. The main sensor has a resolution of 48-megapixels and an aperture of f/2.0, while the second imaging module has a resolution of 8-megapixels and an aperture of f/2.4. Meanwhile, the third sensor of the handset is a Time-of-Flight module. This camera setup is placed in a sliding mechanism, and the shooters will rotate to the front or back depending on the needs of the user. An advantage of incorporating this camera setup is the consistency in the quality of images taken by the Galaxy A80.
Impact: More information about the handset may become available in Samsung’s upcoming launch date scheduled on April 10. While it is more likely that the device will be called the Galaxy A80, there is still a possibility that Samsung may unveil two smartphones instead, with the second smartphone called the Galaxy A90.
