The differences between the upcoming OnePlus 7 and OnePlus 7 Pro may be more profound than expected based on newly leaked press renders of the as-yet-unannounced handset. The images show a design in what is presumably Mirror Gray that is eerily close to doubling down on the same used in the company’s previous handset, the OnePlus 6T — down to the rounded edges, waterdrop notch, textured power button, and screen size.
The company has made small adjustments to bezels, display resolution, and other details such as a larger earpiece speaker grill, rather than completely revamping the design. The bigger change to the design might actually be that the LED flash has been moved to within the same raised bezel as the camera sensors.
So it seems the larger OnePlus 7 Pro will pack in all of the latest features and changes, skipping past the smaller OnePlus 7.
Stark differences from big brother
Compared to the more ambitious OnePlus 7 Pro and its mechanical slider camera, all-screen front panel, and other features, the OnePlus 7’s updates will require buyers to look past the skin-deep aluminum and glass facade.
To begin with, the 6.67-inch OnePlus 7 Pro will pack a QHD+ resolution Fluid AMOLED display with a 90Hz refresh rate but the smaller 6.41-inch OnePlus 7 will feature a 2340 x 1080 pixel AMOLED panel.
While each will be powered by a Snapdragon 855 64-bit octa-core SoC, the less expensive OnePlus 7 will only come in 6GB or 8GB options in terms of memory. The Pro edition is expected to also feature a 12GB option although both will be limited to either 128 or 256 GB storage options. Both of those are confirmed to ship with the latest UFS 3.0 storage variant too, featuring around double the data storage speed.
The vertically-aligned triple camera found on the OnePlus 7 Pro isn’t present on its more diminutive counterpart either. Instead of an array comprised of 48-megapixel (f/1.6 aperture, OIS), 8-megapixel (f/2.2 aperture, OIS, telephoto), and 16-megapixel (ultrawide-angle lens, PDAF) cameras, the OnePlus 7 only shows two. The primary 48-megapixel snapper remains the same but with a slightly larger f/1.7 aperture but the secondary sensor is a 5-megapixel snapper.
An optical fingerprint scanner will likely be present under the display in both gadgets, based on the lack of a reader anywhere else on the pictured device and each is expected to utilize the same forward-facing 16-megapixel camera.
The color shown is the same as one of the three found on the larger OnePlus 7 Pro but it isn’t clear whether Nebula Blue or Almond (Gold) will make their way to the smaller gadget too.

All signs here point to a handset that will be noticeably different from its larger, more premium counterpart when the two smartphones launch. In theory, that should equate to a much lower cost for the still comparatively high-end OnePlus 7 too.
That other device will land at up to several hundred dollars more than the OnePlus 6T by many accounts. With only a small number of external changes, it may be that OnePlus is hoping to keep the cost of the newer OnePlus 7 close to the upper limits of its predecessor’s price point — under $600. The launch is set to take place in just over a week on May 14.
