Huawei has filed for trademarks for its new operating system in more than nine countries, as well as Europe. Ahead of Huawei rolling out the new operating system this fall.
Following the US ban by President Trump, Huawei has been working on its own operating system, which is apparently going to be called “Hongmeng OS“. There’s not a lot known about this new operating system right now, but we do know that it will be compatible with Android. Meaning that Android apps can run on it, similar to BlackBerry OS.
The trademark application is needed for Huawei, especially if it is looking to roll out this new operating system pretty soon. It’s one of the final steps before rolling it out too. Of course, Huawei still needs to do some testing before it can actually roll it out, as usual. The trademark, however does show us that Huawei wants to use this software for more than just smartphones. Gadgets ranging from wearables to smartphones to autonomous vehicles. Which coincides with recent reports we’ve seen about Huawei wanting to get into autonomous cars.
Huawei had been working on this operating system for a few years, before Trump had banned the company from working with the US. It was the company’s backup plan. But that plan became urgent once Trump signed that executive order last month that put Huawei on the Entity List. As Huawei is now unable to work with any US companies. That means that it can no longer work with Google and get Android from Google. Though it can still use the open source version of Android. But that is a very barebones version of Android and it wouldn’t get help from Google with Android.
After that happened, Hongmeng OS became an urgent matter for Huawei. Especially since they only have about 90 days to work with Google before the ban goes into effect, fully. Huawei has been talking about the new operating system pretty vaguely so far, and that’s because it is still in testing and not complete. But it should be pretty soon, as Huawei is planning to roll this out in the fall, possibly with the Huawei Mate 30 launch, which usually takes place around September.
Huawei was on pace to become the world’s largest smartphone maker this year, dethroning Samsung and pushing Apple down to third. But this ban by President Trump has delayed that descent. However, with Huawei working on its own operating system, it could bring about a third player to the smartphone OS war, which is desperately needed. Right now, it’s a market that is dominated by Android, with iOS sort of being an after-thought – since other companies can’t use it. So this could be a very good thing for mobile, in the future. Though, at launch, Hongmeng is probably going to be a pretty rough experience.
This trademark is a step closer to Hongmeng OS being a reality, but it’s still a bit far off from coming to your Huawei and HONOR smartphones.
