The Google Pixel 4 is still a few months away from being officially unveiled, but it is getting quite a bit of attention on the rumor mill.
The latest rumor comes from BGR, who claims to have a source inside Google that is giving them some specs on the upcoming smartphones.
Firstly, let’s address the elephant in the room. The Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL will finally get more RAM. Google is giving both smartphones a boost to 6GB of RAM. That’s a good thing. Considering how bad the Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL were with the 4GB of RAM included in those.
Secondly, both smartphones are going to be slightly taller. We’re looking at 19:9 aspect ratios here with 2280×1080 on the Pixel 4 and 3040×1440 on the Pixel 4 XL. So we’re still getting Full HD+ and Quad HD+ on both of these smartphones. They aren’t that much taller, jumping from 18:9 to 19:9 isn’t a huge jump. But there is one thing missing from this leak, and that’s the actual screen size. But we expect it to be pretty close to the Pixel 3’s screen sizes.
This still leaves quite a bit of questions to be answered. Like, what is going on with the front-facing camera? We’ve been hearing from other publications that Google is not using a notch this time, and instead there will be a decently-sized chin and forehead on the Pixel 4 series. That would mean that the actual physical phone is taller, and not just the display. It’s possible that Google could go with a pop-up camera, but that’s not something we’ve heard in the rumors thus far.
Then there’s also the fact that there is more RAM this time around. Does that mean that the camera is going to need more RAM? Or that Google couldn’t slim down the camera and operating system to still work on the 4GB of RAM model? There’s a ton of questions here still, and many of these we won’t get answered until the Pixel 4 debuts in October. So we’ll have to wait until then to see.
There are a few things we already know about the Pixel 4 though. It will have at least two cameras on the back, and there’s no rear fingerprint sensor. Which likely means that it will be under the display like most other phones these days. And we know this because Google shared an image of the Pixel 4 on its Twitter account not too long ago.
Google typically announces the Pixel smartphone in the first week of October. So we still have a good three months before the phone is set to be released. Lots of things could change between now and then, so we’ll just have to wait and see what Google has up its sleeves. We’ve heard that Google has a few different models that it is working with. But it’s likely that the one Google showed last month is going to be the one we see in October. It won’t be long until we see a full review of the Pixel 4.
