With apparently just under four months left to go before the launch of the Nokia 8.2, rumors have started pouring in and it seems like the device will come with a couple of firsts for the company. A leaker with a decent track record has revealed quite a many features of the device and for a sub-premium phone, they look pretty good.
First off, the phone is tipped to sport a pop-up selfie camera, something which no Nokia device has come with to date. The motor will apparently house a 32-megapixel Samsung GD1 sensor which churns out 8-megapixel pixel-binned shots. For the uninitiated, the Quad-Bayer pixel-binning technology shrinks the resolution of the final image by a quarter to make it cleaner and this comes in handy at night time, when there is not enough light.
For reference, the phone’s predecessor, the Nokia 8.1 has a 20-megapixel selfie camera. Moreover, when the device came out, although it was hailed for its premium build quality, the notch was considered an eyesore. Perhaps that’s why the company decided to opt for a pop-up camera this time. And in any case, notches seem to be on their way out, with most vendors opting for either an elevating camera or a pinhole one, although the latter isn’t that common yet. Others, like OPPO and Xiaomi, have readied prototype units with under-display cameras.
In recent times, there have been numerous reports claiming that the adoption rate of 5G handsets will increase with the introduction of affordable 5G-ready smartphones and it seems like the Nokia 8.2 could be one of the first of those devices. After all, it has been rumored that HMD Global is working on two 5G-enabled phones, one of which is a mid-ranger and since the new report claims that the device might be underpinned by the Snapdragon 735 SoC, the Nokia 8.2 is a likely candidate.
The unreleased Snapdragon 735 chipset will reportedly be developed on the 7nm node, just like the flagship Snapdragon 855 chipset and it will apparently also have an in-built 5G modem. However, it’s equally plausible that the phone will be underpinned by some other Snapdragon 700 series chipset.
The rumor also claims that the phone will have 8GB of RAM and 256GB of internal memory, and while this may not sound a lot, it will be the most Nokia has ever used. So, as mentioned before, this is shaping up to be an interesting device, if viewed in the context of other Nokia phones.
Of course, if you look beyond the HMD owned company, you will find mid-ragers with far better specifications, but for Nokia, this is surely a biggie. After all, the company is slowly making its way back into the market, after being brought back from the dead by HMD.
Lastly, according to the new leak, the Nokia 8.2 will come pre-installed with Android 10 Q. Based on this bit of information, it can be assumed that the device will be released sometime during the holiday season, as Google isn’t expected to begin the stable phase of the next big Android release before August.
