Specs have leaked for the Huawei Mate 30 and Mate 30 Pro, but now screen protectors for the upcoming series have made their way on the scene. The latest screen protector leak comes from tech insider Ice Universe, who says that “suspected that Mate 30/Mate 30 Pro’s protective film leaks.”
There’s very little to see of these new screen protectors, but one thing of note is that their designs bear striking similarity to those of the upcoming Samsung Galaxy Note 10 and Galaxy Note 10+ that will be announced on August 7th.
The screen protectors are tall with some width to them, which seems to be the trend Samsung is taking with its Galaxy Note smartphone series. There are camera and speaker cutouts, but the top of the screen protectors has been concealed from view. There’s no way to know anything about camera cutouts, speaker cutouts, a notch, and so on.
In May, the specifications of the Huawei Mate 30 and Mate 30 Pro leaked, revealing that the Mate 30 Pro will feature a 6.7-inch OLED display made by BOE. The regular Mate 30 as well, which would see Huawei distinguish these two phones by cameras and other features rather than screen sizes. There’s no certain confirmation at this point that the regular Mate 30 will carry a large display, though it’s certainly possible.
Last year, Huawei broke with normal naming conventions when it emerged with the Mate 20 Pro featuring a 6.39-inch OLED panel versus the 6.53-inch OLED panel of the Mate 20.
The presence of an OLED panel for the Mate 30 Pro implies the “Pro” model is a high-end handset with a high-end price tag (no surprises there).
Other specs and features for the glass-and-metal Mate 30 Pro include the 7-nanometer, octa-core Kirin 985 SoC with the 5G-enabled Balong 5000 modem, a quad rear camera setup with a Time Of Flight (ToF) sensor, an in-display fingerprint sensor, 55W SuperCharge fast charging as opposed to the Mate 20 Pro’s 40W charging, 10W reverse wireless charging, and fast wireless charging. The quad rear camera setup on the Mate 30 Pro will have the same layout as the Mate 20 Pro. The Mate 30 Pro will come in 4G and 5G variants.
As for the Mate 30, the specs may prove similar to those of the Mate 20, though with some spec bumps. The Mate 20 featured a waterdrop-styled notch, so that may return on the Mate 30. A single front-facing camera was on the Mate 20, though whether or not Huawei gives it a dual selfie camera is ultimately up to Huawei.
The Mate 20 Pro featured IP68 water and dust resistance, and that seems very probable to return on the Mate 30 Pro. The Mate 20 deserves IP68 water and dust resistance (IP53 on any smartphone today just isn’t good enough), but that’s another surprise only time can reveal.
The Mate 30 and Mate 30 Pro will have at least 128GB of storage (if not more, say 256GB out the box) plus the ever-cherished microSD card slot for expandable storage. The Mate 20 series had 6GB of RAM, and the Mate 30 series could see 8GB of RAM this year.
As for the mobile OS, Huawei could bring its EMUI 10 skin atop an Android build (such as Android 9.0 Pie), but the launch date for the Mate 30 and Mate 30 Pro (Fall 2019) suggests that Huawei won’t have access to Android by then, as Google’s revocation of its Android license takes full effect on August 19th.
These upcoming phones will likely not launch in the United States unless Trump eliminates the Huawei Ban. Currently, American companies are allowed to sell to Huawei, but Huawei is still forbidden from selling its products and networking gear in the US to American companies. White House economic advisor Larry Kudlow says that Trump’s relaxation of the ban is “not a general amnesty” for Huawei but is instead an olive branch for American high-tech companies who pleaded with Trump to allow them to sell for the purpose of profit.
