Galaxy Fold 2 Coming With 8-Inch Display, Bendable Glass Cover: Report

The Samsung Galaxy Fold is still not available for purchase, and some info regarding the second-gen product just surfaced. According to a report by The Bell, Samsung is planning to get a cover glass for the Galaxy Fold 2 from a domestic supplier.

The report actually names the company as well, it’s called Dolnsys. It is worth noting that both Corning and Schott are also planning to release similar products. Dolnsys has developed a glass protective film for foldable displays. It has also created an ultrathin tempered glass that can be applied to bendy smartphones.

Ultra Thin Glass will be included on the Galaxy Fold 2

This glass is officially called UTG (Ultra Thin Glass), and it is tougher than your regular polyimide protective film that is applied to the Galaxy Fold. Dolnsys’ UTG product will go into mass production next year, just in time for Samsung’s needs.

The second-gen Galaxy Fold handset will utilize an 8-inch display, if the report is to be believed. Samsung is allegedly taking its time with the order with Dolnsys, as the Galaxy Fold 2’s release date is unknown. The original Galaxy Fold is still not available in the market, so Samsung cannot specify the release timeframe of the Galaxy Fold 2.

Galaxy Fold re-launching soon

Speaking of the Galaxy Fold, the device is expected to launch in the near future. The latest report claims that it will arrive in September, but it remains to be seen if that is accurate. The report claims Samsung plans to re-release its first foldable smartphone around the time new iPhones are set to debut.

As most of you know, the Galaxy Fold was announced back in February, along with the Galaxy S10 series. The device was supposed to be available for months now, but Samsung stumbled into some problems.

Early review units that shipped to outlets had a major issue with the display. Displays were breaking down for people, while others broke them themselves by taking off the protective cover applied on top of the display. People thought that Samsung applied a screen protector on top, which turned out not to be the case.

Samsung claims to have fixed the Galaxy Fold issues since postponing its launch, so the launch should follow soon. Samsung’s first foldable smartphone will have some competition, though. Huawei introduced its first foldable smartphone a while back as well, the Huawei Mate X.

That device was also supposed to become available already, but Huawei postponed its launch. The company did that to avoid Samsung’s faith, most probably. In any case, the latest report claims that the Mate X will become available in November. The company has not confirmed anything just yet.

Galaxy Fold will have some competition in the market

Several other companies are developing a foldable smartphone, including both Motorola and Xiaomi. Motorola plans to revive its Razr brand in order to release a foldable phone, and that device is coming soon. The phone is expected to launch in either December 2019 or January 2020. The device will cost €1,500, according to a report, and it will be a mid-range handset. The Motorola Razr is expected to sport a rather appealing design, for a foldable phone. That handset will look considerably different to both the Galaxy Fold and Huawei Mate X.
