Foldable smartphones have been quite disappointing thus far, but that will hopefully change soon. Both Samsung and Huawei announced their foldable phones, but the release of both has been delayed several times thus far. That being said, many people are waiting for Motorola’s offering, the Motorola Razr.
The Motorola Razr managed to intrigue quite a few users… well, leaks related to it, and its patent, as the phone hasn’t been announced just yet. That being said, Letsgodigital has seemingly managed to get some more info regarding this smartphone.
Motorola Razr coming in December 2019 / January 2020
The source shared the possible launch timeframe for the Motorola Razr, along with some other details. According to that info, the device will launch in Europe in December 2019, or January 2020.
Interestingly enough, the source claims that the European launch will take place after the US launch. That probably means that the phone will land in the US before the end of the year. When? Well, your guess is as good as ours, but the source did use the word “shortly”, we’re guessing only a couple of weeks before.
High price tag for a mid-range smartphone
The device will be priced at €1,500 in Europe, claims Letsgodigital. What’s interesting is, this won’t be a flagship smartphone. It is said that the Motorola Razr is classified as a “mid-range smartphone with mid-range SoC and small battery”.
So, in a way, the Motorola Razr will not compete directly with the Samsung Galaxy Fold and Huawei Mate X. If that price tag is accurate, Motorola will ask quite for a mid-ranger, even if it is a new form factor and everything. Still, that price tag is below what Samsung and Huawei are asking for their phones, it costs considerably less than the two other offerings.
The source also notes that this will be a flip phone with a large flexible screen on the inside. In addition to that, it also says that a smaller “notification screen” will be available on the outside. This kind of confirms previous rumors, leaks, and even some design concepts.
The Motorola Razr’s design is aimed to resemble the design of the original Motorola Razr cellphone. That cellphone was one of the most popular ones in Motorola’s history, so the company is looking to revive the Razr brand with this foldable handset.
The Huawei Mate X is expected to arrive in November, at least according to the latest report. That device was supposed to be available already, but Huawei opted to postpone its launch. Samsung encountered some issues with the Galaxy Fold, which is why its launch has been postponed. The device had some display-related issues, and even though it’s expected to launch soon, we don’t know when exactly.
It could have limited availability
The Motorola Razr will probably have rather limited availability. Asking €1,500 for a flagship handset is a stretch, even if it’s a foldable one, but the company will ask that for a mid-ranger. This device will probably not reach developing markets, and Motorola will have to be very careful with its placement. We could be wrong, of course, people may be extremely interested in this phone despite its price, no matter how improbable that may sound. One thing is for sure, as far as the design is concerned, this is probably the most exciting foldable smartphone that is coming. That goes for most people, at least, and presuming that the leaks are accurate.
