OnePlus has released its August 2019 security patch just in time for the month of August.
OnePlus announced the update rollout on the company blog yesterday. “Hi everyone, we are starting to push the incremental roll-out of OxygenOS 9.5.11 for the OnePlus 7 Pro.” The changelog for the OxygenOS 9.5.11 update shows an optimized adaptive brightness, screen touch sensitivity while gaming, accidental notification bar touches while making calls, updated the Android security patch from July to August 2019, along with general bug fixes and improvements.
The interesting thing about OnePlus’s rollout of the August 2019 security patch for the OnePlus 7 Pro is that not even Google’s own Pixel 3 series has it yet — and Google is Android’s owner and the one responsible for the rollout of major system updates and security patches. For OnePlus to release the new Android security patch for August 2019 before Google is exceptional and commendable.
OnePlus isn’t the only one that has released security patches ahead of Google for its smartphones. Motorola has done the same for its smartphones, with Android 6.0 Marshmallow security patches and system updates back before its acquisition by Lenovo.
Mobile app firm Apteligent crowned Motorola its fastest Android update rollout company in its July 2016 Android manufacturer update report. Nearly all other Android OEMs tend to be much slower on rolling out Android updates. OnePlus’s August 2019 security patch rollout is exceptional, based on Android’s update history.
OnePlus debuted the OnePlus 7 Pro back on May 14, 2019. The device features a 6.67-inch “Fluid AMOLED” panel with a QHD+ resolution of 3120 x 1440p and a 19.5:9 aspect ratio. The display is the first curved QHD panel OnePlus has ever used in a smartphone. Alongside the aspect ratio, curved AMOLED panel, and a QHD+ resolution, the OnePlus 7 Pro brings HDR10+ certification as well as a 90Hz display refresh rate.
HDR10+ certification is used to ensure that color production on the 7 Pro matches that of cinematic quality. The 90Hz refresh rate is designed to make graphics “fly” when gaming or watching TV shows and movies. Few popular smartphones have anything above 60Hz for refresh rates.
A number of Android-powered gaming smartphones are bringing 90Hz and even 120Hz refresh rates, but to see OnePlus bring it to the 7 Pro is commendable. Flagship smartphones are transforming themselves more and more into “pocket PCs,” and PCs are still the King machines when it comes to gaming.
Corning’s Gorilla Glass 6, the latest in display protection, is here on the 7 Pro. Other spec goodies include 6GB/8GB/12GB RAM configurations, 128GB/256GB storage options (depending on RAM selection), UFS 3.0 flash storage, and a 4,000mAh battery with 30W Warp charging (OnePlus fast charging).
12GB of RAM is quickly becoming the new RAM standard on flagship smartphones, though the jump from 4GB to 6GB of RAM still seems as though it happened yesterday. Storage options for flagships are moving beyond 64GB to 128GB as a base storage offering with 256GB as the typical top storage offer.
Samsung released its Galaxy Note 9 back in August 2018 with 128GB as the base storage offering (6GB RAM) and 512GB (8GB RAM) as its top offering, but few Android OEMs are doing that just yet. 256GB storage versions seem to be the easier storage jump for now.
