Another day, another Pixel 4 leak. This time, we’re hearing more about the Pixel 4 Face Unlock feature that’s coming this year.
Evidently, the Face Unlock data is going to be stored on-device only. It will not be hitting Google servers or stored in the cloud. That will make things tougher when moving to a new device, but it does make your data safer. And it means that Google won’t be using it for anything else.
Face Unlock will be the only biometric option on the Pixel 4
At least when looking at this particular build of the software.
Looking at the security settings in the screenshots below, we can see that there is no fingerprint option available for securing the Pixel 4.
That means that there is no under-display fingerprint sensor, which might actually be the best decision that Google has made in quite some time. Seeing as under-display fingerprint sensors are pretty terrible right now.
Though, that also means that logging into apps like password managers, bank apps and others, are going to be a bit more difficult. Unless Google is planning to announce a new API for face unlock authentication.
Which is possible, but that would also mean that app developers will need to support it. And given how long it took them to support the Fingerprint API, it won’t be a quick thing.
Other specs confirmed once again
We’ve already seen many specs leak out for the Pixel 4, and this leak once again corroborates those leaked specs.
Those specs include a 90Hz display with a Quad HD resolution (so this is obviously the Pixel 4 XL and not the smaller Pixel 4). The display is also coming in at 6.23-inches. That’s smaller than the Pixel 3 XL from last year, and that’s likely because Google has ditched that huge notch that the Pixel 3 XL had.
As well as the Snapdragon 855 chipset and 6GB of RAM.
This leak really just confirms what we’ve already know about the Pixel 4, including some of the specs. That’s good to see, as it likely means that these specs are going to be correct when Google does announce the device next month.
The Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL are expected to be announced next month, likely on October 15, if the leak from yesterday is anything to go by. While the Pixel is not the most sold smartphone, it is one of the most popular smartphone launches of the year. Largely because it shows us what direction Google is going in for the next year.
