Huawei had introduced its flagship smartphones earlier today. The company dropped three phones, the Mate 30, Mate 30 Pro (both 4G and 5G variants), and Mate 30 RS Porsche Design. The latter is essentially the same as the Mate 30 Pro, but with a slightly different design on the back.
Having said that, we’re here to focus on the two main offerings, the Mate 30 and Mate 30 Pro. The Porsche Design model is essentially a special edition of the Mate 30 Pro. That device offers the same spec sheet as the Mate 30 Pro.
We’ve already checked out the Mate 30 and Mate 30 Pro specifications separately. It’s time to compare the two phones, in a way. This won’t be your regular comparison, though, as we’ll take a look at the differences between the two phones. They are similar in some ways, but different in others.
There are quite a few design differences here
As far as the design is concerned, these two phones are somewhat similar, but it’s easy to differentiate them. Both phones are made out of metal and glass, but they do look different if you take a closer look.
The Huawei Mate 30 features a taller, and narrower display notch than the Mate 30 Pro. That’s because it houses less sensors than the Mate 30 Pro. The Mate 30’s corners are also more rounded than the Mate 30 Pro’s.
You will also notice that the Mate 30 Pro’s display is curved, while the Mate 30’s is not. The Mate 30 offers a regular flat display, which is easily noticeable. The Mate 30 also includes ones less camera on the back, compared to the Mate 30 Pro.
Both phones include a physical power / lock key on the right, but only the Mate 30 has physical volume up and volume down buttons. The Mate 30 Pro opted for touch-sensitive volume up and down buttons.
The Huawei Mate 30 is taller, wider, and thinner than the Mate 30 Pro. The two phones weigh about the same, as the difference is in two grams, 196 vs 198 grams. So, the Mate 30 Pro is a bit heavier. It is also worth saying that the Mate 30 supports IP53 certification for water and dust resistance, while the Mate 30 Pro ships with IP68.
The same CPU, but different RAM and storage setups
The two devices are fueled by the same processor, the Kirin 990. This is Huawei’s newest chip which got announced earlier this month at IFA 2019 in Berlin. This is a flagship processor, needless to say, which comes with a built-in 5G modem. We’re looking at a 64-bit octa-core processor here, by the way.
As far as RAM is concerned, the Huawei Mate 30 offers you some options, while the Mate 30 Pro does not. The Mate 30 comes in both 6GB and 8GB RAM variants, while the Mate 30 Pro is available in an 8GB RAM model only.
Both Huawei Mate 30 RAM options are packed with 128GB of storage. The Huawei Mate 30 Pro, on the other hand, comes in both 128GB and 256GB storage options.
The Huawei Mate 30 differences are visible in the display, battery, and camera departments
The Mate 30 features a larger display than the Mate 30 Pro. Interestingly enough, both are fullHD+ display. The Huawei Mate 30 includes a 6.62-inch 2340 x 1080 AMOLED panel. The Mate 30 Pro, on the other hand, comes with a 6.53-inch 2400 x 1176 “Waterfall” AMOLED display. So, the Mate 30 Pro’s display is curved, while the Mate 30’s is flat.
The Mate 30 includes a smaller battery than the Pro model, despite the fact it has a larger display. The phone sports a 4,200mAh unit. The Mate 30 Pro, on the other hand, features a 4,500mAh battery. Both devices support 40W wired fast charging, and 27W wireless fast charging.
The two phones have the same main and telephoto cameras, but they’re different in all other camera aspects. The two phones share a 40-megapixel (f/1.6 aperture lens, OIS, wide-angle) and 8-megapixel (telephoto, f/2.4 aperture, OIS) cameras.
The Huawei Mate 30 also includes a 16-megapixel super-wide-angle camera (f/2.2 aperture) on the back, and a 24-megapixel unit (f/2.0 aperture) on the front. The Mate 30 Pro, on the other hand, sports a secondary 40-megapixel camera (super-wide-angle, f/1.8 aperture) on the back, along with a 3D Depth Sensor. That handset also sports a 32-megapixel (f/2.0) unit on the front. It is also worth saying that the Mate 30 does not offer advanced facial scanning, nor air gestures.
They’re coming in four colors, and are not cheap
Huawei had announced four colors variants for each of these two devices. The Huawei Mate 30 and Mate 30 Pro will both be available in Space Silver, Cosmic Purple, Classic Black & Emerland Green colors. The company also announced “Vegan Leather” models in two colors, both of which come with a leather back, instead of glass.
The Huawei Mate 30 with 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage is priced at €799. The Huawei Mate 30 Pro with 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage will cost you €1,099. These are both 4G variants. Now, the Huawei Mate 30 Pro 5G comes with the same RAM and storage setup as the regular model, but is €100 more expensive. So, that variant of the phone is priced at €1,199.
