Samsung has now been spotted taking advantage of this year’s IFA event to peel back the wraps on a gadget dubbed that Galaxy Tab Active Pro. As its name implies, that’s Samsung’s next iteration on its business and extreme environment-ready Android tablet.
One of the most prominent features of the device, as it’s shown in Samsung official images, is the ruggedization around the edges and what appears to be an oversized S Pen. Samsung says the Galaxy Tab Active Pro is S Pen compatible. But it hasn’t said whether that’s what’s garaged in the frame on the left-hand side.
The ruggedization is hardly surprising but that’s not light ruggedization here. The Samsung Galaxy Tab Active Pro is ruggedized to US military standard MIL-STD-810G.
That means it’s been tested to survive a drop onto surfaces — typically, concrete — from up to 1.2-meters or just shy of 4-feet in height.
Samsung has tested water and dust incursion to an ingress rating of IP68. That equates to protection against “permanent” submersion at 1.5-meters or 4.9-feet in clear water.
Galaxy Tab Pro specs point to a mid-range device with extras
Specifications provided in Samsung’s reveal are sparse but it did unveil a few details in some of the associated documentation. To begin with, this is a 10.1-inch WUXGA TFT tablet.
No information about resolution has been provided but the company does indicate that it’s both wet touch and glove ready for a work environment. Moreover, the screen has a much higher brightness than might be expected at 550 nits.
That’s packed into a frame that, including its ruggedized shell, measures 243.5 x 170.2mm by 9.9mm thick. Weight comes in at around 653 grams. Samsung has a 13-megapixel shooter with autofocus on the back of the tablet, while there’s an 8-megapixel camera over the display.
Under the hood, 4GB of RAM and 64GB of microSD card expandable storage — up to 512GB — are included. A Qualcomm-built chip is in use here, but Samsung hasn’t specified which one. That’s an octa-core chip clocked at 2GHz.
Powering the unit, Samsung has packed in a 7,600mAh capacity battery.
All of that hardware drives a business-software enhanced and Samsung Knox-hardened version of Android 9 Pie.
Some details of the Galaxy Tab Active Pro are still obscure
As per the company’s IFA 2019 announcement, the Samsung Galaxy Tab Active Pro will be available in Germany soon in two variants.
The Wi-Fi-only configuration will start out at €599 while mobile connectivity via LTE can be included from €679. Since it’s unlikely that Germany will be the only sales region, that’s only a small piece of the availability puzzle.
The Samsung Galaxy Tab Active Pro will also only be made available to commercial customers and businesses. Samsung does divulge that software updates will be provided for four years from its launch. But that doesn’t say much about opening up in other regions or pricing if and when that happens.
For now, Samsung simply hasn’t said where exactly this will be made available but it seems as though it will only ever be sold for business and enterprise users.
