Google’s latest hardware lineup is now here and includes a number of new devices.

Together, the new devices represent the latest Made by Google product portfolio and are the products Google wants you to buy in 2020.

Heading into the new year, Google is offering a new smartphone, a new Chromebook, a new “Home” smart hub, a new Wi-Fi router, as well as a new set of earbuds. Here’s everything you need to know about all the new Google devices.

Google Pixel 4

The Pixel 4 is the latest smartphone from Google.

Similar to the previous model, the latest Pixel phone comes with a joint focus on the camera and smart features. In some cases, combining both for an even better experience.

When it comes to the cameras, the Pixel 4 sports a new look. This is most obvious in the design with the new Pixel phone employing a square camera setup. Here you’ll now find two camera sensors comprised of a 12 megapixel standard sensor and a 16 megapixel telephoto sensor.

On the front of the device, there’s only one camera. However, the Pixel 4 does also contain a Soli chip and that’s big news. This is a chip that emits electromagnetic waves and absorbs information based on environmental interactions with those waves. In other words, it senses what those waves are hitting and can do things in response.

A prime example is gestures. With this chip on board the Pixel 4 offers a level of gesture control that no longer requires the user to touch the device. This is in addition to an improved version of facial recognition for things like face unlocking and mobile payments.

Which brings us to the rest of the smarts.

As to be expected, the Pixel 4 comes loaded with the Google Assistant. Although not any old Google Assistant, but the new Google Assistant. The one Google claims is now faster, smarter and more helpful.

If all that’s not enough, there’s also two versions of the Pixel 4. There’s the standard Pixel 4 and the Pixel 4 XL.

Google Pixelbook Go

If you’re in the market for a new Chromebook, then you might want to consider the Pixelbook Go.

Although the Pixelbook Go takes over from the previous Pixelbook from 2017, this is not your typical “upgrade.” Yes, it comes with all the usual spec improvements you might expect with a newer device, but Google has taken a decidedly more back to basics approach with its “Go” model.

For one thing, there’s no Pixelbook Pen available this time. To be clear, not only does the Pixelbook Go not have a new pen accessory, but it doesn’t support them in general. This is a stylus-free Chromebook.

The same more simplistic design largely extends to the rest of the Pixelbook Go as well. For example, Google is definitely placing more of an emphasis here on the portable nature of the device. You can take this to mean it’s more rugged, easier to keep hold of, and generally a more usable product while on the go.

Overall, you can think of the Pixelbook Go as more of a premium Chromebook for everyone and not necessarily, a premium Chromebook like the Pixelbook was.

Google Pixel Buds

The last Pixel branded product announced at this year’s Made by Google event was the Pixel Buds.

These are a new pair of wireless earbuds and follow on from the version released in 2017. However, this is arguably one of the products that’s seen the most obvious design changes compared to its predecessor.

The original Pixel Buds were hampered somewhat by the inclusion of a cable. While they were wireless earbuds, they were still connected to each other by the cable. The new Pixel Buds do not suffer in the same way.

These are true wireless earbuds in this respect, and the lack of a connecting cable also means they are more discrete in general. What’s more, in spite of the smaller size they still come with the same battery life. Buyers can expect the Pixel Buds to last up to five hours on a single charge.

In addition, just like the original, the new Pixel Buds come with a carry case that also assumes the position of a charging case. Although that too has now changed in size making it far easier to carry with you than before. With the carry case’s full capacity taking into account, up to 24 hours of usage is available.

Another area where the new earbuds are similar to the original Pixel Buds is Assistant. The new Pixel Buds feature the Google Assistant which not only lets you control the listening experience, but also get answers to questions asked and even translate a language while on the go.

Google Nest Mini

Google Nest Mini is the latest “Home” smart home product from Google.

Earlier in 2019, Google went on a rebranding spree which saw the “Home” line absorbed into the Nest brand. As a result, the latest Google smart speaker is now called the Google Nest Mini and not the Google Home Mini.

Besides the name change, there’s not a lot new here in terms of the design or the main features. This is the same product although that’s not necessarily a bad thing.

After all, the Google Home Mini was a simple to use and inexpensive product. The Nest Mini continues with the same ethos.

While the Nest Mini looks exactly like, and costs exactly the same as the Home Mini, there are some improvements. For one thing, Google has placed more of an emphasis this time on the sound output. This essentially means you can expect the Nest Mini to be a louder device with a better sound quality in general. In fact, Google says you can now expect twice as much bass.

Another, and arguably the most interesting change is the new ability to mount the Nest Mini to a wall without having to pay for a separate mount.

Granted, these might not be the biggest improvements for a next-generation device. However, at the same price, the Nest Mini does offer far more value than the Home Mini ever did.

Google Nest Wifi

Nest Wifi is another product that has undergone a name-change.

The Nest Wifi is a Wi-Fi router and marks a considerable upgrade compared to the 2016 Google Wifi.

Just like the original model, the Nest Wifi is a mesh router. Therefore, it is designed to add to the Wi-Fi coverage in a home and additional units can be purchased and added to further improve Wi-Fi coverage.

Unlike the original model, the new version sports a fresh new look. Not only is it more compact, but it also now aesthetically fits in better with the company’s other products. It is more Home-like. Well, more Nest-like.

A major improvement with Nest Wifi is the voice assistant support. Just like everything announced today, Nest Wifi is compatible with Google Assistant. This means owners can use Assistant to control the Nest Wifi in various ways, such as deactivating the Wi-Fi when or where it’s not needed.

What’s more interesting, however, is the additional units that you can connect to Nest Wifi and their Assistant support.

As mentioned, like Google Wifi, Nest Wifi lets you add additional units to increase coverage in a home. However, the previous units were simply additional units in the sense that they were not much different to the main unit.

With the new model, they are different. These “points” are in fact, smart speakers. They have the ability to act just a Google Nest Mini does, but with the added benefit of extending the mesh router network.

Basically, if you’re buying into the Nest Wifi ecosystem, then you won’t need to buy any Nest Mini speakers as you’ll be getting the same functionality for free. That’s as long as you buy the additional Nest Wifi units.

Overall, Google’s 2019 event was more like an Assistant event. Yes, the Pixel 4 and 4 XL might have been the “stars” of the show, but Assistant was the underlying and consistent theme throughout.

Whether you plan on buying a new smartphone, a new smart speaker, a new Chromebook, earbuds, or even a new router from Google, you’re getting the Assistant as well.

All in all, while this may have been branded as a Made by Google event, it was most certainly a Powered by Assistant event.
