Sling TV now supports a Chrome in-browser experience on Android mobile. In other words, you no longer need the app to watch Sling TV.
The company confirmed the browser expansion support for mobile today and that it is now live.
To get started, head over to the Sling TV website on a phone using a newer Chrome browser version.
Sling TV on Android without the app
While it might seem like a given that Android mobile users could access Sling TV through a mobile browser, that wasn’t the case. At least, not through Chrome which was aimed more at desktop Sling TV users.
Instead, the preference had been for mobile users to access the service via the Android app – available to download for free from the Google Play Store.
However, Sling TV recognizes that not everyone wants to download an app. That’s where the new support comes in.
Accessing Sling TV now is as simple as heading over to Sling.com and signing in to your Sling TV account. The only major caveat is the version of Chrome for Android is 56 or higher.
Sling TV investing more in the Android experience
This announcement comes fairly soon after another recent and Android-specific announcement.
Earlier in October, Sling TV confirmed its “free experience” is also now available on Android. Basically, you no longer need to have a paid subscription to enjoy Sling TV shows and movies.
Yes, the content you will have access to is limited compared to the paid subscription as it is mostly just single episodes and not whole series. However, if you’re just looking to check out some episodes, or see what Sling TV is all about then the free access is a great tool to do so.
Now with the added in-browser support for Android mobile live as well, the two features should work fine together.
For example, if you’re not currently a paid Sling TV subscriber then you probably don’t have the Android app installed on your device. Now, you can still check out Sling TV for free, using your phone, without having to download the app.
