Samsung’s Galaxy S11 is one of the most anticipated smartphone series of 2020. A lot about the handsets have already been revealed by numerous leaks and renders. And while the wait for their grand unveiling in February 2020 continues, a new rumor suggests the devices may not even be called Galaxy S11.
Tipsters Ice Universe and MMDDJ_, both have suggested that Samsung will launch the Galaxy S10 successor as Galaxy S20. We are expecting at least three models of the next Galaxy S flagship. And if we are to go by the latest rumors, they will be called Galaxy S20, Galaxy S20e, and Galaxy S20 Plus instead of the Galaxy S11, Galaxy S11e, and Galaxy S11 Plus Samsung’s traditional naming pattern suggests.
However, neither of the two tipsters have shared any concrete evidence to support their claims. MMDJ_ has simply tweeted “S20”, whereas Ice Universe followed their “Galaxy S20” tweet with another tweet saying “Next year is 2020, and 20 is a new beginning.”

If Samsung indeed brings this change in the naming scheme, it’ll not be the first smartphone maker to do so. Huawei has previously named the successors to its Huawei P10 and Honor 10 smartphones as Huawei P20 and Honor 20. Interestingly, the Galaxy S20 branding syncs perfectly with the year of 2020. However, the 2021 Galaxy S flagship will not be called Galaxy S21 if Samsung were to continue to follow this route. They should be called Galaxy S30.
Samsung is likely to apply the same changes to the Galaxy Note series as well. The company likes to keep a uniformity in the naming of the two series. This is precisely the reason it skipped the Galaxy Note 6 and launched the Galaxy Note 7 in 2016. That skip proved costly for the company, but for all the different reasons, of course.
If not in name, expect a big leap in performance
Whether Samsung takes this big leap from S10 to S20 is unclear right now, even though Ice Universe‘s track record with Samsung leaks has been strong enough to be taken seriously. However, it’s pretty clear that the next generation Galaxy S flagships will bring significant performance improvements over their predecessor.
Snapdragon 865 or Exynos 990 SoC, 108-megapixel primary camera with a 5X zoom sensor, 120Hz display, and 5,000mAh battery are some of their rumored specifications. Come February 2020, and we’ll get to know what exactly Samsung has up its sleeves. The company is likely to host an “Unpacked” event a week or so ahead of the MWC 2020 in Barcelona. The annual mobile event commences on February 24.
As for the name change, we’ll need to wait for corroborating evidence to find out if it is indeed happening.
