Motorola Edge Plus Verizon Exclusive Flagship Coming: Tipster

Motorola has been out of the flagship phone scene for a while. That could all change, as one leakster says the Motorola Edge Plus (Edge+), a Verizon exclusive, is coming to market later this year.

Motorola Edge Plus (+) could be a Verizon exclusive flagship

Well-known industry leaker Evan Blass (Twitter handle @evleaks) says that the Motorola Edge Plus could be an exclusive Verizon flagship in the works. The Motorola flagship could head to top US carrier Verizon Wireless. There are no other details available regarding this handset, other than its name, flagship status, and that it could be a Verizon-only phone.

Defining Flagship: How would the Motorola Edge Plus fit the mold?

The Motorola Edge+ could be a flagship. If it is, it would have to meet certain requirements. For one, Motorola would likely have to place a Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 SoC in the handset. 5G would be the best cellular connectivity. After all, Verizon is pushing its 5G connectivity. Then, there’s the 128GB of minimum internal storage. 6-8GB of RAM and a triple rear camera setup are other flagship qualities these days.

Alongside these features comes an in-display fingerprint sensor. Since the Motorola Edge+ would be a flagship phone, IP68 water and dust certification would match some other premium phones.

There’s no way to know what the Edge+ will bring to the market. With Motorola releasing its foldable Razr phone soon, the company is back in the flagship business.

Motorola Edge+: New Phone, Nostalgic Name

The new flagship, Motorola Edge+, is a new phone but with a nostalgic name. The name conjures up memories of Samsung’s one-hit-wonder flagship, the Galaxy S6 edge+ (with a lowercase “e”; keep that in mind). The Galaxy S6 edge+ was unveiled in Fall 2015, the same year as the Galaxy S6 and S6 edge. The handset was announced alongside the Galaxy Note 5 at Samsung’s last Unpacked 2015 event.

The Galaxy S6 edge+ was nothing more than a wider-screened version of the regular S6 edge “sibling.” It was called “edge+” because it provided a little something more, a larger “edge,” perhaps.

When it comes to the Motorola Edge+, there’s little to go on except to recall that this moniker brings back memories of Samsung’s own handset. Samsung is mellowing out its curved display. What an ironic time to see Motorola unveil a curved display (if that’s even what the Edge+ is).

Motorola’s new foldable Razr: a catalyst for the Motorola Edge+

The Motorola Edge+ could be a unique take on Samsung’s edge, though. In that regard, the upcoming Edge+ could be in the same vein as Motorola’s new Razr foldable phone. The foldable Razr phone (2019) isn’t an entirely new take on the Razr flip phones of bygone days. In theory, making a smartphone that folds in half is not much different than crafting the old flip phone. And yet, it’s a huge step forward for Motorola.

One of the former giants of the flip phone era, Motorola may just be prepared to live on the innovative edge and go where no OEM has gone before. The Razr foldable proves that, whatever lies in store, Motorola is definitely back.
