Google Photos appears to be preparing to give us a simple feature that should have been available years ago. The ability to remove audio from videos in Google Photos, from the app on our smartphones.
It would be in the edit screen for each video. On the left side, showing the speaker on mute, and then you can save it and it’ll remove the audio. This is a really simple feature, that surprisingly Google Photos has not had. And well, still doesn’t, at least not yet.
This information and image comes from Jane Manchun Wong, a Twitter user who is pretty well-known for reverse-engineering apps to find hidden features. And this is one of them. Unfortunately, Wong didn’t find out any other information about when the feature might be available, or if it is nearly complete.
It could roll out this week, this month or this year
With Google, you really never know when this feature could roll out. But we are hoping that it’s going to be sooner rather than later.
Since it is unclear whether this feature is in early testing or not, it could be coming as soon as the next Google Photos update, or even months from now. Google does like to test things out a bit before it rolls out new features to everyone.
But hopefully this one is going to be available pretty soon. It’s a feature that many Photos users have been asking Google to roll out for years now. And it’s a very simple feature, that just about every other video editor has, even Samsung’s built-in video editor has this feature.
Why would I want my video to have no audio?
Well there are a number of reasons. But one is if it is a video that doesn’t need audio. Say your dog did something funny and you recorded it, but have the TV on in the background or maybe a baby crying. That audio doesn’t need to be in the video. So you can mute the audio and then share it on Facebook, Twitter, and other social media networks.
And with this feature, you won’t need to download a separate app or post it to Instagram first, to mute the audio. Instagram has the ability to mute it and then save the video for you. So you’d have both versions. It might not be a widely used feature, but it is going to be used by a number of people.
