It seems like some OnePlus 8 Pro units are having an HD video streaming bug. In other words, they cannot stream video in HD on services like Netflix and Amazon Prime Video.
Users have been complaining in OnePlus Forums, and the whole situation has been reported by Android Authority. This seems to be happening after a recent update.
Some users are not able to stream video in HD on their OnePlus 8 Pro, but it is showing it in SD. This seems to have started happening with version 15.5.5, though it still persists in version 15.5.6 for some users.
The OnePlus 8 Pro HD video streaming bug dates back to early May, it seems
Users have started reporting this problem on May 2, so it has been around for a while. It is worth noting that this problem is not widespread to all OnePlus 8 Pro units.
This seems to be a Widevine DRM issue, where it’s downgrading content from L1 to L3. In other words, the device enters this security level and it’s unable to stream HD and HDR content from various services.
The OnePlus 8 Pro should be able to stream HD and HDR content without a problem, of course. It’s one of the most powerful devices in the market, and it has that gorgeous QHD+ 120Hz OLED display.
Widevine, for those of you who are wondering, is a Google-owned service that is designed to provide various encryption schemes and hardware security to distribute video content.
OnePlus still did not release a statement regarding this issue, as of writing this article. The company has been contacted to comment, and probably will in the near future.
OnePlus is probably aware of the issue, but hasn’t released a statement just yet
The company is probably aware of this issue at this point, and is hopefully working on a solution. Some people may consider this a major issue even though they can still stream content, so it’s not exactly the worst bug we’ve seen.
The OnePlus 8 Pro was announced back in April, and has been available for some time now. The phone is considerably more expensive than its predecessor, but it packs in basically every feature users requested.
The OnePlus 8 Pro also comes with a great camera setup which provides great results. The company definitely delivered on the highest level this time around. If you’d like to know more, check out our review.
Now, it seems like this HD video streaming feature is only affecting the OnePlus 8 Pro users, not the OnePlus 8 users. Well, at least we haven’t seen any reports of such an issue on OnePlus 8 devices.
