Huawei Trademarks MateDisplay & MateScreen Ahead Of Mate 40 Launch

Huawei will reportedly launch the Mate X2 foldable smartphone along with the Mate 40 series in September. Ahead of the launch event, Huawei now filed trademarks for two new names — MateDisplay and MateScreen.

The company filed for the trademarks on August 13. Both the trademarks are classified as class 9 on the EUIPO (European Union Intellectual Property Office) website. These could be the names for the displays of the upcoming Mate-branded products.

Huawei MateDisplay & MateScreen could be the names of new display technologies

Based on the leaks, Huawei will be announcing a bunch of new products including the Mate 40 series, Mate X2, and MateBook laptop. The Mate X2 might come with an in-folding design like the newly launched Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2. If you didn’t know, the previously launched Mate X and Mate Xs came with an out-folding design featuring just a single display.

Since the foldable display only comes with a plastic protective layer on the top, the out-folding design has been deemed more prone to damage than in-folding design. While the new Galaxy Z Fold 2 featured ultra-thin glass (UTG) on the top, the upcoming foldable smartphone from Huawei could be using colorless Polyimide (CPI) film instead.

Mate 40 series might launch in September

While the foldable display on the Mate Xs is called FullView Display, the new 120Hz foldable display of the upcoming foldable smartphone could be called MateDisplay or MateScreen. Even the new MateBook’s display can associate with one of the two names. With the Mate branding, this new display technology will be mostly limited to the Mate devices.

Along with these new devices, Huawei might also unveil premium earbuds called MateBuds or MatePods. In the last couple of months, the Chinese company also trademarked MateHome and MateStation in Europe. Like Google Home, the MateHome could be the name of an app for managing Huawei’s IoT devices.

It already has the Huawei AI Life app on Android smartphones and Huawei SmartHome app on iPhones with similar functionalities. During the Mate 40 launch, the company might announce the renaming of both these apps as MateHome.

Speaking of the MateStation, its described as a ‘mobile phone accessory’ capable of providing internet access in the trademark filing. While this can bring Samsung DeX-like functionality, it could also be a USB Type-C dock for MateBooks. We should be knowing the complete details only after their official debut (most likely) happening in September. Stay tuned for the launch event!
