Samsung Brands Its Punch-Hole Display With Iris Ring Trademark

A trademark application with KIPRIS confirms that Samsung has secured its Iris Ring moniker. Notably, it also hints that the iris scanners might make a return soon on Samsung Galaxy devices.

The Samsung Iris Ring trademark application was filed last week, and it was reported first by members at GalaxyClub. Besides, the trademark application does not contain any logo or information on how Samsung aims to use it.

However, Samsung has reportedly confirmed that it will be used for its punch-hole display cutout. Apparently, these punch-hole cutouts are known as Infinity-O displays by Samsung.

If we take a look at the trademark application, it has been filed by Samsung’s display arm and not the mobile division. This could mean that Samsung is developing a new display to house this iris ring.

Samsung has used iris scanners previously on its device but could not capitalize on this feature. And since Galaxy S10 and S20, they have just disappeared.

So, is iris scanner making a comeback with Samsung Iris Ring trademark?

But it seems like the company had some other plans and iris scanner has to wait, for now. In an official post, Samsung confirmed that this whole hype around the Iris Ring trademark is branding for its advanced punch-hole display.

Samsung has introduced its most advanced punch-hole display technology in the recently launched Galaxy Note 20 Ultra and Galaxy Z Flip 2 smartphones.

Apparently, it was not an easy task to achieve the optimum color and best screen quality around the punch hole, if the device is sporting a variable 1 to 120Hz refresh rate AMOLED panel.

As per the official blog post, this new OLED display with Iris Ring provides a clear contrast between the display area around the hole as well as the punch-hole itself.

Albeit difficult, Samsung was able to achieve that, and it has named this technology as Iris Ring. So, those who were thinking this as the return of iris scanner, a bummer for sure.

Meanwhile, on the part of Samsung, it is essential to name such a new technology that they have been able to achieve. Since they have put is all the efforts, this new technology now has a name, i.e. Iris Ring.

Meanwhile, Samsung is also working on developing an under-display camera. While they are at it, ZTE is already on the verge of launching the world’s first under-display camera phone. It is called the ZTE AXON 20 5G.

It is scheduled to come out on September 1, 2020. For complete information on that product, you can check out our previous post here.
