As part of the ongoing Samsung Galaxy Unpacked 2020 event, the company has now announced Wireless DeX as a way to gain access to multi-screen smartphone and tablet capabilities. As the branding here implies, this is a feature that Samsung flagship users have been waiting on for quite some time.
Namely, Wireless DeX allows users to connect their Samsung Galaxy Note 20 series phone or Galaxy Tab S7 series tablet to an external display. But that’s without a dock or a cable. That means users can stream media on a larger display. Or stream to gain access to a ‘Pro-grade’ video and productivity experience. The only requisite is that both devices support Miracast and are on the same Wi-Fi network.
How does Wireless DeX work with the Galaxy Note 20 and Galaxy Tab S7 Devices?
As to how Wireless DeX will work for buyers of the latest Samsung devices, that’s fairly straightforward. It works via Miracast. That’s a wireless direct technology found in all 2019 or newer Samsung TVs. But, of course, it’s also available in a huge assortment of displays from other brands too.
That doesn’t just allow users to stream up to 8K multimedia at up to 24 frames-per-second. That’s at a 21:9 or 16:9 aspect ratio. Although the higher-resolution streaming is a key selling point here. It doesn’t only let users cast their screen and gain access to a Windows-like full desktop experience either. It also enables two screens to be used simultaneously.

What if you don’t have a Miracast enabled display panel?
Now, presumably, DeX isn’t just wireless on the new Samsung Galaxy Tab S7, Galaxy Tab S7+, Note 20, and Note 20 Ultra. So, if users don’t have access to a Miracast display, it can still be used in the more traditional, wired mode.
That won’t necessarily allow all of the above-mentioned new features to be taken advantage of. But it should still mean that users can hook up a DeX dock or via a cable. Then users can control the experience via a Bluetooth mouse and keyboard — or the Samsung device itself. Samsung doesn’t appear to be leaving anybody out of this. Especially since some users have likely come to rely on DeX for productivity and entertainment.
