If You're Getting A PS5, You Might Want This WiFi 6 Router

The PS5 has WiFi 6, and if you plan to get one or if you already landed a pre-order, then you might want this new router from Netgear.

It also has WiFi 6 and it’s a dedicated gaming router, which means it’ll be optimal for gaming on the PS5. That’s assuming you won’t have the PS5 connected through ethernet and will use a wireless connection.

And if that’s the case, then the Netgear Nighthawk XR1000 has loads of features that can benefit the gaming experience. Most of it boils down to the software and the features within it that you can use to customize your connectivity.

Control bandwidth allocation for your PS5 with this WiFi 6-enagled router

One of the bigger and more impactful features is the bandwidth allocation.

This will let you prioritize what devices in the home get the most bandwidth, such as your PS5. So the experience on it is smoother with little to no interruptions.

Many other non-gaming routers offer this already. Google’s Nest Wifi and Google Wifi routers for example, allow you to prioritize devices. Nest Wifi in particular has a setting that lets you prioritize Stadia so your streaming quality for gaming in the cloud is a better experience.

This is more or less the same thing here. This isn’t the first Netgear router to offer this type of feature though. The bandwidth allocation is part of Netgear’s DumaOS software. Which is in a number of its routers.

What’s different about it in the XR1000 is that it comes with DumaOS 3.0, which lets you allocate what type of activity gets more bandwidth in addition to which devices get more bandwidth. Basically you can de-prioritize all types of traffic like Netflix, sharing of files, or just simple web browsing and prioritize only your online gaming.

The DumaOS 3.0 software also adds the capability for players to pull up a heat map of sorts that shows them which games have the lowest ping at the moment. This is based on a showing of servers for those games. So players could essentially connect to the one with the lowest ping for a better gaming experience.

Lower latency and up to four times faster speeds than older Nighthawk routers

Alongside the software inside, the XR1000 also comes with upgraded hardware components. Such as a 1.5GHz processor.

It also allows for lower latency and higher throughput. Netgear also says that the speeds it gets are four times faster than that of older Nighthawk routers. All of which is going to be useful for your PS5 gaming sessions.

The Netgear Nighthawk is already available to pre-order on Amazon and it retails for $350. It begins shipping on October 5, so it’ll show up well before your PS5 will.
