Spotify Reveals Significant Changes In Listening Habits Amongst Parents

Spotify has revealed some interesting changes in the listening habits of parents and children. It seems that increased time spent at home with the family has had a big impact on the music parents and children listen to.

This comes as Spotify aims to expand its business model into new areas. It has created a new sports playlist for fans who want to stay up to date with the latest content. The company has also entered into the eSports market with a partnership with League of Legends.

The likelihood is that these listening habits may revert back to something resembling normal. This is because most kids have headed back to school in recent days which seems the be the main factor affecting the change in these listening habits.

Family time sees children influence listening habits

Spotify’s research demonstrates that over half (53%) of parents have had their listening habits influenced by their children and teens in recent months. A similar number of parents (58%) have also said that they have listened to their children’s music over the summer.

This has had the knock-on effect of parents listening to more pop music than ever before. This is compared to other genres and Spotify believe this is due to the influence of their children. In turn, this has meant Billie Eilish has received more first-time listens from parents than any other artists.

This news comes from a survey conducted by Spotify. They interviewed 1,000 parents and carers in the UK with children between the ages of 6 to 16 in the last week of August. Spotify revealed the increased family time brought on by the summer holidays and the pandemic had a big impact on their listening habits.

Parents reveal that one of the main places this has had an impact is in the car. 51% of parents said listening to music with their kids in the car.

One-third of parents said their children recommended artists or songs to them. Whilst a quarter received a playlist recommendation and roughly the same amount said they overhead their kids talking about music which influenced their listening habits.

As mentioned, Pop has seen the biggest increase in listens from parents of any genre. However, Hip-Hop, Rock and R&B also increased significantly.

In terms of artists behind Billie Eilish, parents also began listening to Stormzy, Ariana Grande and Harry Styles much more often.

It is very interesting how increased family time has had a big impact on the way they listen to music. How this continues to progress as children return to school will also be intriguing to track.
