Samsung is prepping to launch two new entry-level Android smartphones soon – Galaxy A02 and Galaxy M02. The devices were recently spotted in a certification listing on the Nemko AS website, suggesting that they are nearing their market release.
The model numbers mentioned in the certification document include SM-A025F/DS, SM-A025F, SM-M025F/DS, SM-A025M/DS, SM-A025M. Interestingly, model numbers for the two devices are included in the same document by the Norwegian certification company. This suggests that the Galaxy M02 could be just a rebranded Galaxy A02 for select markets or vice versa.
Samsung has done this with the Galaxy A01 and the Galaxy M01 as well. Since the new phones will be arriving as the successor of these two existing models, it’s not very surprising that the Korean company is going the same route again.
Galaxy A02, M02 launching soon as Samsung’s latest affordable offerings
The Nemko AS certification listing does not give away any details about the phone. However, a Geekbench listing last month had given us an idea of what to expect from the Galaxy A02. The handset runs on an entry-level Qualcomm Snapdragon chipset with 2GB of RAM and 32GB of storage.
The Galaxy A01 and Galaxy M01 both run the Snapdragon 439 SoC. So their successor may pack the Snapdragon 450, if not better. Also, the Galaxy A01 was available in a 16GB ROM variant while the Galaxy M01 came with 3GB of RAM. So there’s a good chance that the upcoming Galaxy A02/M02 would be available in multiple memory configurations as well. All the variants should feature a microSD card slot for storage expansion.
Separately, a Wi-Fi Alliance certification has revealed the Galaxy A02 to be running Android 10 out of the box. This is another indication that the device will be arriving sooner than later. With Android 11 already over a month old, Samsung can’t be launching an Android 10-powered phone several months later.
Reports have indicated that the purported Galaxy A02/M02 could feature a 5.7-inch HD+ LCD screen. That appears to be unchanged from their predecessors. The dual rear camera setup will also reportedly carry over unchanged so we’re still looking at a 13-megapixel primary camera and a 2-megapixel depth sensor.
The front-facing camera could be an 8-megapixel sensor on the new phone, up from a 5-megapixel sensor on the previous generation models. A 3,500 mAh battery will reportedly fuel this phone.
It goes without saying that the Galaxy A02 and Galaxy M02 will be entry-level offerings from Samsung. In all likelihood, the phones would debut with a price tag below the $150 mark.
