Samsung is discontinuing the SmartThings Classic app on October 14, 2020. It will no longer be usable starting that date. You won’t be able to access or use the app to create and manage routines, the Lock Code Manager, and the Smart Home Monitor. In simpler terms, it will lose all of its smartness.
You’ll have to migrate to the new SmartThings app to continue using routines and other smart features. The new app offers most of the same features as the Classic version but with a new and improved interface. It also brings more powerful automation features, a massive device ecosystem, and much more.
To ensure that you don’t lose any of your SmartThings Classic routines, Lock Code Manager, and Smart Home Monitor data, you’ll have to migrate to the new app before October 14th. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to migrate your data.
How to migrate from SmartThings Classic to the new SmartThings app
Migrating to the new SmartThings app involves a few simple, easy-t0-follow steps. Open the SmartThings Classic app on your smartphone. You’ll see a prompt that reads “Migrate This Location Now” at the top. Tap on that banner.
Now swipe left through the four slides explaining the migration process and tap on “Migrate now.”
Wait until the migration process completes then tap “Next”. You’ll see a banner saying “Migration of Home was successful,” where Home is the name of the location. There will be two options – “Not right now” and “Get the new SmartThings” – below.
If you have multiple locations in your SmartThings account, tap on “Not right now” and repeat the above steps for each location. Once you finish migrating all your SmartThings locations, tap on “Get the new SmartThings.”
Next, you’ll be prompted to download the new SmartThings app. If you already have the new app installed, tap on “Got it” or tap on the Google Play button to download the app.
Now open the new app, grant the required permissions, and you’re all set. You’ve successfully migrated all your data from the SmartThings Classic to the new SmartThings app. Make sure that you sign in with the same Samsung account you were using in the Classic app.
It might take you some time to get used to the new UI. Here are a few things to remember:
- Routines are now Scenes and Automations.
- Smart Home Monitor is now SmartThings HomeMonitor. It can be found under SmartApps which is available from the side menu.
- Smart Locks is now Smart Lock Guest Access.
- A Lighting Groups menu lets you control multiple lights together.
