You Can Now Login To Spotify With Your Google Account, With Some Caveats

Spotify has announced that it will now introduce support for your Google account. As reported by 9to5Google this feature has become largely available over the weekend based on the support page.

This all comes in the midst of the shutdown of Google Play Music. This began last week with the loss of support to Assistant speakers. What this means is that Spotify has spotted the opportunity to make things easier for Google account users given Google Play Music will no longer be around soon.

On top of this Spotify have been busy with their own issues and troubles. Alongside some new features, the company came into a bit of bother over a miscommunication about offline playback support for Wear OS.

The company marked a support page ‘implemented’ only to release a statement saying that any changes in this area were near impossible.

Spotify will hope that the introduction of support for those with a Google account will take the shine off this incident. The company will also hope it may entice some Google Play users over to the brand as an addition.

Spotify introduces support for Google accounts

Now if you go to sign into Spotify from an Android phone or tablet, you can do so with your Google account. This will take the place of a traditional Spotify login meaning you can save yourself from another password.

This really is the only main advantage of this integration. A bit more security seems to be about the only thing users will gain from this change.

On thing to note is that it is impossible to go from a traditional Spotify account to this new Google login option. This means that if your Spotify email address is the same as your Google email address this will not work.

Instead, you will be prompted to log in with your email address and password instead rather than your Google account. This also means the if your email address is different you will create a new account when you sign in with Google.

It appears that the new integration went live over the weekend. It looks like it should be live on Android and Web clients but not on iOS and Windows. This is another thing to be wary of when trying to sign in with a Google account.

However, it does look like it has rolled out to everyone in one go. This is at least a positive as often these change filter out quite slowly across the user base.
