According to a new report by 9To5Google, YouTube is now testing out a new Video Quality Preference feature. This aims at simplifying the resolution selection.

While there are other video players, the way YouTube allows the users to handle streaming resolution is something different. However, that might change pretty soon.

At present, users have the convenience of choosing resolution right from 144p to up to up to 1440p or more (in some phones). Depending on the speed of your data, you can select the resolution to stream buffer-free.

But as per the new report, with this new feature, when tapping the quality button from a video’s overflow menu, it does not show a list of resolutions.

Besides, it now gives you four options. These four options include Auto (recommended): Adjusts to give you the best experience for your conditions, Higher picture quality: Uses more data, Data saver: Lower picture quality, and Advanced: Select a specific resolution.

Moreover, the Quality of the current video is shown at the top of the menu under “Quality for current video”. Additionally, there is an Advanced button that will give you the previous list of resolutions.

YouTube Video Quality Preferences Feature was spotted testing in version 15.45.32 beta

The Auto option sets the resolution automatically based on the internet speed, while Higher picture quality will show you the video in the best possible resolution.

Many users would not find this new video quality preference menu pleasing. As the older menu allowed greater flexibility in choosing the video quality.

The description of each setting in the new YouTube beta update is clear, and it does what it says. Good thing is that the old list is there, but it is now buried under the Advanced button.

The new YouTube Video Quality Preferences feature is currently labeled as beta. In fact, this feature was spotted testing with version number 15.45.32 available in the beta channel.

Apparently, it means that this feature would not be arriving for YouTube users across the globe. And it would be initially available regionally.

YouTube has gone through several changes during the past few months. Recently, it received an updated video player page with new gestures and suggestive actions as well.

Frankly, there was no need to bring this new menu for choosing YouTube Video Quality Preferences, as I personally prefer the old menu.

And I am sure there are several users who would agree with this. Let us know in the comments below what would you prefer, the new video resolution menu, or the old one.
