Samsung's Exynos 2100 Flagship SoC Will Launch On January 12: Official

Samsung has officially revealed the launch date for its next flagship Exynos chipset. The much anticipated Exynos 2100 (name not official yet) will arrive on January 12, 2021. That’s just two days ahead of the expected unveiling of the Galaxy S21 series.

“A whole new Exynos is coming,” Samsung says in a teaser video posted on Twitter. The 15-second long video doesn’t reveal anything about the chip itself, but it ends with the words “Exynos is back,” suggesting that Samsung has indeed turned the tide with the Exynos 2100. The tweet is also accompanied by the hashtag #Exynos_is_back, further showing the confidence of the company.

The last couple of years haven’t been the best for Samsung’s chipset division. The Korean giant has had to face heavy criticism from users and shareholders alike for the consistently widening performance gap between Exynos chipsets and the competing solutions offered by Qualcomm.

Samsung knows it has let the users of its Exynos processors down and now wants to do right by them. Earlier this month, the company posted a kind of emotional apology towards the Samsung community, thanking them for continued support. It has now revealed the official launch date for its upcoming flagship processor. The company also seems very confident that the new chipset will revive its reputation as a flagship mobile SoC maker.

One of the major changes Samsung’s Exynos team has made this year is replacing its in-house custom Mongoose CPU cores with the stock ARM cores. The Exynos 2100 will reportedly feature one ARM Cortex-X1 core, three Cortex-A78 cores, and four Cortex-A55 cores. The chipset will employ the company’s new 5nm EUV process and will pack a Mali-G78 GPU.

The Exynos 2100 will be up against the Qualcomm Snapdragon 888, which is also a 5nm chipset. Interestingly, the new Qualcomm chipset features the same CPU core setup as the Exynos 2100. It has its prime Cortex-X1 core running at 2.84GHz. The Cortex-A78 and Cortex-A55 cores top up at 2.4GHz and 1.8GHz respectively.

The Exynos 2100, on the other hand, is rumored to offer a top operating frequency of 2.91GHz while the base frequency is reportedly clocked at 2.21GHz. These rumored specs certainly peg the chipset at a much faster speed than the Snapdragon 888. Hopefully, it turns out to be true.

Store executives at Samsung’s Opera House outlet in Bengaluru, India recently confirmed that the Galaxy S21 series will get the Exynos 2100 chipset in the country. European versions of the phones will also likely pack the in-house Exynos processor. Regions like the US and China, meanwhile, should get the Snapdragon 888. It’s not a too-long wait before things go official though, as we are now less than a month away from the launch.
