Samsung might be preparing to launch Android tablets in the Galaxy M series. According to a new report, the Galaxy Tab M62 is in the works as the first tablet in the series. The company plans to launch it early next year, the report cites a person familiar with the matter.
The Galaxy M series currently includes smartphones only. The Galaxy M51 is the top of the line offering in the series, packing a quad-camera setup, a 7,000mAh battery with 25W fast charging, a Snapdragon 730G processor, and up to 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage.
Interestingly, reports emerged last month that Samsung is readying the Galaxy M62 as the next high-end Galaxy M series phone. However, it turns out the device could be a tablet after all. Or perhaps they are two separate devices. Samsung already launches smartphones and tablets bearing the same moniker (Galaxy S7 from 2016 and the Galaxy Tab S7 from 2020). Tablets, of course, have that ‘Tab’ prefix in the name.
However, two different devices having identical names and arriving around the same time may still create confusion among consumers. So there’s much to learn yet before we could say for sure.
Coming back to the device, the report claims that it will be a compact tablet offering from Samsung. The report last month said the device would bear the model number SM-M625F. It also revealed that the Galaxy M62 “smartphone” would come in a 256GB storage variant. Not much else is known about the device as of yet.
Samsung seemingly wants to diversify its tablet portfolio
Samsung currently launches Android tablets in the Galaxy Tab A and Galaxy Tab S series. While the S series devices offer flagship-grade performance, the A series is more of an affordable offering from the Korean company. It appears the company now wants to further diversify its tablet portfolio with the Galaxy Tab M series.
Samsung last year made some major changes to its budget and mid-range smartphone strategy, merging a few existing lineups while introducing newer ones. The company has since flooded the market with devices at every price point, offering something to every kind of customer.
This strategy has worked wonderfully well for the company, as it posted its highest-ever quarterly smartphone sales in three years in Q3 2020. It may now be trying to take a leaf from it and go the same route with its tablet offerings as well.
That said, it is just speculation as of now. We’ll have to wait for more details to emerge and paint a clearer picture about whether the Galaxy Tab M62 is a premium mid-range smartphone or an Android tablet from Samsung.
