Qualcomm announced the second generation 3D Sonic Sensor. The new second-generation 3D Sonic Sensor will be faster than its predecessor. To clarify it will be 50-percent faster than its predecessor.
It also doubles the area that it covers to easily read your fingerprint. The first version covered 36 square millimeters (4mmx9mm). However the new second-generation covers an area of 64 square millimeters (8mmx8mm)
Second generation 3D Sonic Sensor aims to increase speed and reliability
The second-generation 3D Sonic Sensor will read and collect 1.7 times more biometric data according to Qualcomm. This is thanks to the larger surface area coverage. In addition, the larger sensor will allow 50 percent faster processing as well. One problem with in-display fingerprint sensors is that they are slower than capacitive. This second-generation looks to fix that problem.
As CES continues and more and more new technology is released there is no doubt that many are waiting on the release of the Samsung Galaxy S21. Qualcomm’s first 3D Sonic Sensor was featured in Samsungs previous flagships like the Samsung Galaxy S10, Note 10, S2, and Note 20 series.
The new sensor will debut in early 2021. Samsung’s Unpacked event is the next big event to happen this year. It isn’t too farfetched to assume the Galaxy S21 series will feature the new second-generation 3D Sonic Sensor.
As a result of the current in-display fingerprint sensors have speed and reliability issues sometimes they cause problems. For example, they can be slow and even unreliable at times. Consequently, some of Samsung’s experienced these issues.
Qualcomm’s 3D Sonic Sensors are technological magic
Qualcomm’s 3D Sonic Sensors are amazing pieces of technology. The sensor delivers fast and reliable access to your smartphone. The sensor can read your fingerprints no matter the situation. Even with wet fingers, the sensor can read your finger through the glass of the screen easily.
The sensor works by using advanced technology and acoustics (ultrasound waves) to capture a 3D scan of your finger. This scan gets features like ridges, valleys, and even the pores of your finger to create an extremely accurate image.
Due to this, the sensor can accurately read your fingerprint through glass and metal even while wet. This allows for reliable access to your phone in any condition. Qualcomm was able to help advance the move toward an all-screen phone with their in-display fingerprint sensor technology.
With the second generation officially announced it will be exciting to see real-world differences. Maybe this generation will be able to match the speeds and reliability of capacitive fingerprint scanners.
