Google has begun testing a new dark mode for Search on desktop. As reported by The Verge, this will bring search pages in line with the rest of your browser if you have dark mode set.
Throughout the latter part of 2020 Google Search began working on a series of cosmetic changes to its offering. This latest move seems in line with that trend as the company looks to modernize its search engine’s appearance.
Back in September, Google pressed on with its work to launch an in-app browser. This innovation generally looked similar to the iOS app but did offer a bit of refresh in terms of looks.
Prior to this, Search began testing background headers back in August. This aimed to give users a better representation of their searches whilst also appearing more visually pleasing.
This latest dark mode seems to be in a similar vein. The company is clearly looking to marry up all its services in a more aesthetically appealing way.
Google begins tests of desktop Search dark mode
As the above screenshot shows, there is nothing entirely revolutionary about this test. However, it will be a nice addition to add continuity across pages.
The test has obviously not rolled out to everyone but if it has the background to Google Search pages will look very grey.
As of now, it is unclear just how widely this test has rolled out. Quite a few reports have surfaced of users having access to it. This would indicate it is quite widespread. However, it is difficult to really ascertain any details on this.
If this is quite a widespread roll out it could mean that the intention is to fully roll things out soon. Google declined to offer any specific details in a statement.
It read “we’re always testing new ways to improve our experience for our users, but don’t have anything specific to announce right now”.
Some people already began experiencing a dark mode back in January so this appears to be quite an ongoing process.
Dark modes have been steadily rolling out across various platforms over the last few months. Twitter made changes to their dark mode over the last few weeks that caught some people by surprise. Microsoft also has begun testing a dark mode on its Word program.
