Samsung has been long working on a pair of AR (Augmented Reality) glasses. The company showcased an unfinished version of the glasses during the CES 2020 keynote and has also filed multiple patents for the product and the technologies around it. Now we have the first official concept videos of Samsung’s first AR glasses.
Leaked videos shared by Twitter user WalkingCat, who has a decent track record of Samsung leaks, reveal the design and key features of the upcoming AR glasses from the South Korean giant. As you can see in the video below, the glasses could act as a projected virtual screen where users can watch movies or play games with ease.
Other use cases shown in the video include the ability to use the virtual screen as a monitor with Samsung’s Dex Mode. This would allow users to be more productive without needing a computer. The glasses could also be used to make video calls or see the view from a drone’s camera. Previous patents from Samsung have revealed that its AR glasses could show turn-by-turn navigation and holographic images as well.
The upcoming AR glasses also offer a Sunglasses Mode. When activated, this mode would tint the shades so you can wear them outdoors. The glasses appear a bit bulkier as compared to standard sunglasses but there’s nothing unfamiliar about them.
Interestingly, Samsung is calling this pair of AR glasses “Samsung Glasses Lite”. The device is controlled with a Galaxy Watch rather than through air gestures. Perhaps it is indeed a lite model. Samsung may also be working on a more powerful version of its AR glasses, complete with air gestures support.
Samsung’s upcoming AR glasses leaked in concept videos
A second video shared by the same source talks about Samsung’s “Next Wearable Computing” technology. It shows the AR glasses acting as a tool to let users see virtual 3D objects in the real world. There’s the AR office where everything from the keyboard to the monitor is virtual and only the user can see or operate on them.
However, unlike the case with playing games or watch movies, users get an unlimited field of view and can zoom-in on the virtual screen. Similarly, users could explore architectural plans in an immersive 3D view via AR simulation or make holographic video calls.
Both of the leaked videos are conceptual in nature. However, certain details like the blacked-out top edge of the lenses suggest it is a genuine Samsung video. The AR glasses we see in the videos also look like a developed product. It shouldn’t be too long before we get to see or hear more about Samsung’s first AR glasses.
