SEGA has a wild and crazy idea to revive the Crazy Taxi franchise. Alongside a potential revival of another one of its popular titles from the Dreamcast days. Jet Set Radio.
The two titles were among some of the most loved games from the platform in their time. And retained that popularity long after the Dreamcast was no longer a current console. According to IGN, SEGA is considering a potential revival of a number of its different IP.
With a handful of different games on the table for consideration. Currently SEGA is focusing on some of its most well-known properties, like Persona, Sonic The Hedgehog, and the Yakuza series. All of which have had games release in the last couple of years. Though Yakuza and Persona are more recent. Both having had titles launch in the last six months. Whereas with Sonic, the last game to release was Sonic At The Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 back in November of 2019.
SEGA isn’t guaranteed to revive Crazy Taxi
SEGA didn’t confirm that it’s going to be reviving any of its older, more dormant titles. However, the company is at least having discussions about the idea. If SEGA does decide to move forward, there’s also lots of possibilities.
It could choose to revive only one game or it could end up working on a revival of several titles. Games could also be remastered, remakes, or complete reboots. Anything seems to be open for discussion at this point. The details are based on documentation from SegaSammy regarding a financial results presentation for SEGA.
In the documentation, potential game franchise revivals include Crazy Taxi, Jet Set Radio, NiGHTS, Space Channel 5, Rez, Panzer Dragoon, Shinobi, Virtua Fighter, Altered Beast, House Of The Dead, Streets Of Rage, and Soul Hackers.
SEGA also wants to create a “Super Game”
Drawing on nostalgia is a good plan for SEGA. Considering the success that other recent remakes and remasters have had. But it’s not just focused on breathing new life into old IPs. It also has a plan to create a “Super Game” that is targeted to release sometime by the 2026 fiscal year.
There’s also talk of an FPS game that’s currently in development at a European studio. SEGA may not be making consoles anymore, but it’s still very much involved in making games. And it seems that the company wants to bring back some of the magic of its older days in that space.
