Google-Backed Smart Home Initiative 'CHIP' Gets Rebranded To 'Matter'

Project Connected Home over IP, or CHIP, has been in commission for two years now. In a recent press release, we’ve just gotten word that the alliance has changed its name to Matter. This name change also comes with a new logo.

Matter is an initiative that makes it easier for smart home devices to communicate with each other

The Connectivity Standard Alliance (CSA) announced that the company was rebranding. Back in 2019, a group of companies including The CSA, Google, Apple, Amazon, Comcast, SmartThings, and many more came together to establish a universal protocol for smart home devices to run on. This protocol was originally dubbed CHIP but was recently renamed, Matter.

This group of companies is accompanied by a collection of board member companies like IKEA, Silicon Labs, Schneider Electric, Legrand, and Somfy just to name a few. All in all, there are over 180 companies involved in Matter.

Because of the Matter initiative, a wide range of smart home devices can communicate with one another, without the barrier of different software or different connectivity protocols. This also ensures that different devices can be compatible with AI services like Amazon’s Alexa, Google Assistant, and Siri.

The new logo symbolizes what the Matter initiative is all about

The new logo that came along with the name change has symbolic significance. Though it might not appear like it at first glance, the logo is actually an image of three arrows pointing at each other. It symbolizes the convergence between the different companies. All of the arrows, just like the companies themselves, meet in the middle at a singular point.

This symbol will also be the seal of approval. This means when a person buys a product, Matter wants the logo to be a sign that the device will work seamlessly on the Internet of Things.

Smart home devices you should consider buying

If you want to get involved with the Internet of Things, now’s the time. Smartening up your home seems like a daunting task, but it can actually be pretty easy. Smart lighting is a good entry into the smart home lifestyle. They’re inexpensive devices that are easy to control with your voice or smartphone. Devices like the Phillips Hue smart lights are a great option.

When it comes to security, Google’s Nest line of home security cameras and displays is a great way of being able to keep an eye on what’s going on in and around your home. These include smart doorbells and security cameras.
