PS5 global sales are about to take a positive turn. Which is good news for anyone living outside the US. No matter where you live, purchasing a PS5 hasn’t been the easiest task.
Much of this is due to the semiconductor shortage happening around the world, and it’s impacting more than just Sony. With the launch of the PS5 last Fall, consumers have been met with few opportunities to buy the console. Despite this though, PS5 global sales have definitely been positive for Sony.
Even with stock problems, the company has sold upwards of 8 million units since launch. No small accomplishment, to be sure. But, there are still tons of consumers having trouble finding a place to buy the PS5. Even with more restocks happening at a faster rate than before. Sony can’t do much about the shortage of chips, but it can increase the purchase opportunities in other ways. Which PlayStation of America President Jim Ryan says the company is going to be doing.
PS5 global sales will expand thanks to PlayStation Direct
The PS5 has gone on sale at numerous retailers, but coming direct from PlayStation has been an option for US consumers only. The PlayStation Direct store to be specific, is a US-only online store.
But Ryan says Sony will be expanding that to countries outside the US in the coming months. The process will happen over the next year. So not all locations will have access right away or at the same time. As for the new regions, Sony plans to open PlayStation Direct in the UK, Ireland, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, and Belgium.
There are no exact times or dates given here. But with the rollout happening over the next 12 months it’s likely that at least one of those countries will have access to the store front soon enough.
Direct channel sales have amassed huge growth for Sony
One of the main reasons Sony is looking to expand PlayStation Direct is because of how well it’s done. After opening up in 2019, where it made over $5 million in net sales, it’s only continued to grow.
Last year, net sales ballooned to over $20 million. And Sony is projecting that for 2021, net sales will grow to over $60 million. That shouldn’t be too hard of a target after Sony opens up shop in 7 more countries.
