Google is making it easier for its Fiber TV customers to switch from traditional TV to modern streaming services. The company is letting anyone who owns the old Fiber TV box upgrade to a Chromecast with Google TV at no additional cost. It will also replace your old router with a Google Wifi for free.
If you make this upgrade, you will have the freedom to choose the streaming service you want and only pay for those services. You no longer have to pay Google for Fiber TV, which started at $105 per month and offered access to Netflix and Vudu along with a more traditional DVR (via). Each additional Fiber TV box also required you to pay a monthly equipment fee of $10.
Of course, you get tons of other modern features as well. Chromecast with Google TV offers voice remote control, 4K Ultra HD support, personal recommendations, and easy search across apps. All of this at a significantly lower cost than what you currently pay for Fiber TV. Note that with Chromecast with Google TV, you have to individually subscribe to the Live TV services you want to watch. So while you’ll now have more control over the services you want to pay for watching, you are on your own in finding which services offer DVR functionality and whether they charge extra for that.
“The best TV is online,” Google says, adding that everything from “movies, local or national news, live sports, or something more niche,” is now available to watch online. “Google Fiber wants to help Fiber TV customers find their perfect TV experience with streaming TV,” the company said. “We’re starting right now.”
Fiber TV upgrade brings Chromecast with Google TV, Google Wifi for free
Google launched its Fiber TV service nearly a decade ago. But as the landscape has changed over time and everything is now available online, the company has been gradually shedding the legacy aspects of the service and replacing them with modern alternatives. As part of this change, it is now urging Fiber TV customers to upgrade to a “whole new TV experience” with Chromecast with Google TV. Because “you deserve more from your TV.”
Google started testing this “Fiber TV Upgrade” program in Huntsville, Alabama in February this year. The company says more than 50 households signed up for the program. It is now bringing this offer to all existing Fiber TV customers in “every Google Fiber city.”
If you own a traditional Fiber TV box and want to upgrade to Chromecast with Google TV, head over to this page and take advantage of this win-win offer from Google.
