Motorola won’t launch a new ‘Razr’ foldable smartphone this year, it seems. This information comes from Ross Young, a well-known display analyst. He’s usually spot on with his tips, so… there’s no reason to doubt this one.
Motorola announced two foldable smartphones thus far. The first one, the Motorola Razr, arrived at the end of 2019. The Motorola Razr 5G followed about a year later, in September 2020.
Next-gen Motorola Razr won’t launch this year
The company was expected to announce its third-gen foldable handset this year, but that won’t happen, it seems. Ross Young said that the company will probably announce one in 2022, though.
The source claims that Motorola plans to announce its third-gen foldable in the second half of 2022. That could mean that Motorola decided to skip an entire generation, rather than postpone the launch of this device.
If the company intends to stick to its release cycle, at least to a degree, the device may launch in Q4 2022. We’ll have to wait for more information, but the point is, don’t hold your breath for a new Motorola Razr phone this year.
A number of other companies will announce their foldables by the end of 2021
Quite a few other companies are expected to announce their foldables in 2021, though. Samsung will announce two of its own soon. The company is planning to launch the Galaxy Z Fold 3, and Z Flip 3.
Xiaomi is rumored to announce two additional foldable smartphones by the end of this year. Vivo will follow, while OPPO will wait until Q1 next year, probably. More companies could follow, like HONOR, for example.
We’re seeing more and more foldable smartphones, though they’re still quite expensive. Samsung’s upcoming devices are expected to be considerably more affordable than their predecessors. That gives us hope that price tags for foldables will keep going down moving forward. That is to be expected, though, and it is what usually happens as technology progresses.
