The Mozilla Firefox Lite browser is a thing of the past. The company has decided to discontinue the stripped-down version of its Firefox browser. The reason for it? Well, this app became kind of bloated as time went by.
Mozilla Firefox Lite browser has been around since 2017, but it’s not a thing of the past
The Firefox Lite browser was available in the Google Play Store since 2017, and it began its story as ‘Firefox Rocket’. So, it has been on the market for four years. At first, this browser was truly a ‘lite’ app, but that changed over time.
Mozilla added ads to the browser, and it added them in both notifications, and the new tab page. That happened last year, and it didn’t really sit well with Mozilla’s users, which is understandable.
Following that, in February this year, the company added a new travel feature which wasn’t exactly as successful as the company had hoped. That’s understandable considering the pandemic and everything.
As of June 30, the app is no longer supported. Mozilla did not specifically say that it’s discontinuing the app because it became bloated and lost its purpose, basically, but that’s basically what happened. The company did, however, say that the main app is fast enough to render the ‘Lite’ version redundant. That’s basically saying the same thing but in a nicer way.
This app is basically no longer necessary
The Firefox Lite is basically not necessary next to the company’s main app, that’s just a fact. If its development went in another direction, then maybe it would still be around.
The company will no longer provide updates for the app, nor can you download this app from the Play Store at this point. If you still have it on your phone, and use it, it may be wise to switch to something else.
Mozilla’s main Firefox app is actually really good, so you may want to give it a try. If that’s not your cup of tea, there are quite a few other browsers that may interest you. Check out our recommendations, if you’re unsure what to use.
