Galaxy S23 phones feature a special version of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2

The Galaxy S23 series has been announced, and Samsung announced that the “Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 Mobile Platform for Galaxy” fuels those devices. This may sound a bit confusing, but it’s not.

The Galaxy S23 series utilizes a special version of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2

Samsung and Qualcomm partnered up to include the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 inside these phones, but a slightly altered version of it. This version of the chip “features accelerated performance”, which makes it the fastest Snapdragon chip ever.

So, what’s different? Well, this Snapdragon chip features an accelerated Qualcomm Kryo CPU with up to 3.36GHz peak speeds. That’s not all, though. The Adreno GPU has also been improved in both performance and power efficiency, says Qualcomm.

The company says that the “accelerated Qualcomm® Adreno™ GPU enables real time hardware-accelerated ray tracing to deliver life-like light, reflections, and illuminations in mobile games”.

Qualcomm also added that gamers on the Galaxy S23 series will be able to “experience photorealistic human characters in their games due to support for the Unreal Engine 5 Metahumans Framework”. On top of that, the phones feature a Snapdragon Game Post Processing Accelerator, which is supposed to add effects like bloom, depth of field, motion blur, and more.

These devices also use the Snapdragon’s Cognitive ISP

The Galaxy S23 series represents the first smartphones to use Snapdragon’s Cognitive ISP to enable real-time Semantic Segmentation to enhance images.

This chip also enables micro tile inferencing in order to help accelerate complex AI models for increased AI performance. The Qualcomm Sensing Hub is included, and the Galaxy S23 series packs dual AI processors. Those processors support intuitive on-device AI experiences.

Needless to say, this chip also enables 5G, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth connectivity. It is paired with the Snapdragon X70 5G Modem-RF System with the Qualcomm 5G AI Processor. The Qualcomm FastConnect 6900 and 7800 systems are in use on the Galaxy S23 series.

On top of everything we’ve mentioned, Qualcomm also mentions the Qualcomm 3D Sonic. In other words, the company’s in-display 3D Sonic Sensor Gen 2 is in use here. Which is an ultrasonic in-display fingerprint scanner.
