Yesterday during its latest Direct, Nintendo revealed that Game Boy and Game Boy Advance games would be coming to the Switch. The company has finally answered the cries of fans to bring these well-loved retro games to the console. In total there will be 15 games from the Game Boy and Game Boy Advance coming to the Switch at launch, which was February 8. But Nintendo promises more will be added in the future too.
Those looking to relive the boring car rides of their childhood made bearable by a Game Boy can dive into nine different games. This includes Tetris, Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins, The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening DX, Gargoyle’s Quest, Game & Watch Gallery 3, Alone in the Dark: The New Nightmare, Metroid II: Return of Samus, Wario Land 3, and Kirby’s Dream Land.
The list of Game Boy Advance games is shorter but equally as good in terms of quality titles. With launch Nintendo is adding Super Mario Advance 4: Super Mario Bros. 3, WarioWare Inc. Mega Microgames, Kuru Kuru Kururin, Mario Kart Super Circuit, Mario & Luigi Superstar Saga, and The Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap.
Game Boy games on Nintendo Switch support screen filters and multiplayer
Nintendo isn’t just bringing Game Boy and Game Boy Advance games to the Switch. The company is also making it possible to play with friends. Not all games of course will support the multiplayer feature. But games like Tetris and Mario Kart Super Circuit will. You will however need to be friends with the other player, and you can play locally or online. Other games coming in the future should support playing with friends as well. Such as the Pokémon Trading Card Game.
All Game Boy games can also be played with one of three screen filters – Game Boy, Game Boy Pocket, or Game Boy Color.
More games are coming in the future
The list of available launch titles should hold over players for a while. But Nintendo knows players will want more. While it doesn’t say when, it does showcase some of the next games to be added. These include Game Boy titles The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Seasons, The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Ages, the Pokémon Trading Card Game, and Kirby Tilt ‘n’ Tumble. Upcoming Game Boy Advance titles include Metroid Fusion, Kirby & The Amazing Mirror, Fire Emblem, F-Zero Maximum Velocity, and Golden Sun.
To play the Game Boy games you’ll need to have a Nintendo Switch Online membership. If you want to play both the Game Boy and Game Boy Advance games, you need the Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership instead.
