January 2023 update live for Galaxy S10 Lite in the US

About two weeks after rolling out Android 13, Samsung is pushing another update to the Galaxy S10 Lite in the US. The latest release brings a new security patch. While the phone isn’t getting the February SMR (Security Maintenance Release) just yet, last month’s patch is now available. The January security update has already reached the Galaxy S10 Lite in most international markets.

Samsung only released factory-unlocked variants of the Galaxy S10 Lite in the US (model number SM-G770U1). Those units are widely getting the January SMR. The update is live on most carrier networks, including AT&T, T-Mobile, Verizon, Sprint, MetroPCS, US Cellular, Comcast, Cricket Wireless, Tracfone, Nextech, Bluegrass Cellular, Cellular South, and Xfinity Mobile (via). It should just be a matter of time before the OTA (over the air) package reaches every Galaxy S10 Lite unit stateside. The new firmware version for the phone is G770U1UES6HWA1.

This update doesn’t bring any new features or user-facing changes to the Galaxy S10 Lite. But that isn’t surprising. The affordable Galaxy flagship picked up Samsung’s Android 13-based One UI 5.0 custom software with tons of goodies just over two weeks ago. The latest release is all about vulnerability fixes. There are more than 70 fixes in tow this time around. The vast majority (over 50) of those are Android OS patches from Google, with the Android maker labeling all of those as high-severity issues. The remaining 20-odd patches are specific to Galaxy devices and come directly from Samsung.

The Galaxy S10 Lite gets its first security update after Android 13

Samsung launched the Galaxy S10 Lite in January 2020. The phone came running Android 10 out of the box. Android 13 was the final major Android release for the handset. It will not get Android 14. The affordable Galaxy flagship will miss out on One UI 5.1 as well. However, the Galaxy S10 Lite will continue to get security updates for at least one more year. The updates may come less frequently as the device gets older, but Samsung will support it at least until February 2024.

If you’re using this phone in the US, the January 2023 security update is now available for you. Open the Settings app on your Galaxy S10 Lite, go to the Software update menu, and tap on Download and install to check for updates. If the latest OTA update isn’t available for you yet, wait a few days and check again. You may also get a notification once the update is available.
